Gao Xi had been freaking out ever since yesterday, and the fact that Kath was somewhere back there, in the audience, watching him all the time, did not make things better.

Du Shuangyu was staying with Victor for this last stretch of time, before him giving his deposition  –  the highlight of the whole fucking process, and was going to join them at the very end. Obviously, Victor was still hesitating about his testimony.

He ran the back of his hand across his forehead  –  he was sweating. How the hell was it so warm today?! Dammit! And why did Lan Xichen look as cool as a cucumber???

Of course. They had been a tandem before, speaking in front of the respectable jury, and the judge seemed friendly, tolerating his boss's sudden bursts of ecstatic energy, but for him this case was the biggest so far. The biggest in his career.

- At least we could have had sex last night...  -  he mumbled under his nose, ignoring Lan Xichen's distracted "Mmmm?".

No, he wasn't sorry. Last night had been wonderful. But today Kath looked flushed, and she was staring at him, silent, with huge eyes, with expectation.

- Break a leg, you idiot!  –  she had hissed at him before the familiar "ALL RISE!!!".

Watching just how careless Lan Huan was all the time made him even more anxious, and he had to close his eyes and take a couple of deep breaths before going out there, to ask his set of questions to the witnesses. How was his boss so calm? So sure?! Lan Huan seemed unshakable  –  he was not doubting for even a split second that they would win this complicated case!

- It's all thanks to my Wanyin!  –  he had sung the words to them yesterday afternoon, on their way back from prison, making them sulk.

But the truth was that this love  was making him look better, younger, fresher, more cheerful, putting him in the inevitable good mood, no matter how tired they all were. It was giving him strength, and loads of positivity, and annoying optimism. 

The truth was that Gao Xi had not seen Lan Xichen with another girl, or boy, ever since his birthday in November. He took better care of himself too  –  he was drinking less, he could tell that he had cut out the drugs completely, and now was actually impatient to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner  –  a thing that had been pure science fiction in the past!

Well, he could not make assumptions about the sex; whenever he had seen the new couple, they had looked extremely normal, boring even. But he could only guess that Lan Xichen was not lacking any bedroom gymnastics, as he looked pleased, content, even while working such a horrible multiple-murder case.

He had not even lost sleep over this!

And he had managed the Jenny Yao case with such incredible ease! A case that could easily have gone terribly terribly  wrong!!! It was like magic!

- Had he sold his soul to the Devil, maybe???  –  he was mumbling under his nose during one of the breaks, while Lan Xichen was stretching his long legs and resting his eyes.

- What's that, little darling?  –  his boss tilted his head to the side, looking at him with curiosity, totally unabashed after having interrogated a tearful young mother, who had lost her 8-year-old son to the monster.
