6 - A Game for the Books

(Quick side note, any text that's in quotes and italics "like this" means those words are being signed in sign language. I like the idea of the friend group learning sign for Y/ns benefit and just as a tactic to communicate without anyone else knowing on the isle. It'd be too much to describe what each sign is so i'm writing it in quotes. ok thanks :) oh i'm also learning sign so this is just really cool for me to add)

It was time for the tourney game. Evie, Mal, and I were up in the stands watching the boys play. Well, more like watching them sit on the bench. Auradon was currently tied with the opposing team and time was slowly running out. I never thought there'd come a day where I'd be excited to watch a bunch of boys play with sticks.

Evie tapped my shoulder and pointed to where Carlos and Jay were on the bench. "It looks like they might go on the field soon!" Evie signed to me excitedly. Since the crowd was so loud, I put on my headphones. They only did so much though, as some of their screams were still getting through. They were just THAT loud. So Evie shouted to talk to Mal and signed at the same time to talk with me.

I nodded, "Yeah, hopefully. I came to this game to watch Carlos and Jay play, not just sit on the bench."  I signed back.

Looking back out to where the boys were, another player on the field was coming off as both Jay and Carlos were going on. I cheered for them as loud as I could with my headphones on. I may have to be careful around loud noises, but that won't stop me from cheering on my best friends. I thought to myself as I cheered for my best friends.

I had to keep moving around to get good views of Jay and Carlos on the field because the stands were so packed full of people. Jay grabs the ball with his stick first, passing to who I think was Ben. Carlos blocks one of the opposing players and does a little victory dance in his face. I laugh at him and my eyes find the number 8, Jays number, once again. He's just gotten the ball back as some of the other Auradon players are busy blocking and tackling the other team.

As he passed through what I leaned was the "kill zone," flying discs begin shooting at him, which he jumps and flips around to dodge with ease. Once he's through, he passes once again to Ben. Auradon players block and give Ben an opening to pass back to Jay, and he shoots the ball into the goal only to have it blocked by the defender. Shoot! I thought for sure he had it!

Looking over at the timer on the scoreboard told me there was less than 30 seconds left for Auradon to win. My focus draws back to the game and Jay has the ball again. Jay swerves around players being tackled and runs across the field once more to Auradon's goal, passing the ball off to Ben. Jay runs over to a player on the ground- it was Carlos?! When did he get tackled?? Jay helps him up and they run through the kill zone. Carlos uses his shield to block for himself and Jay. The ball is back with Jay. His attention is drawn to Carlos. He throws the ball at Carlos' shield, shooting it up into the air.

Jay jumps over Carlos who dropped to the ground. He grabs the ball once more, and passes to Ben who scores for Auradon!! I look back at the scoreboard and see the time has just run out! Auradon won! We won!!

I turn to Evie next to me. "Oh my god, E!! We won! We did it!!" I was so exited and distracted by cheering for my friends that signing was way out of my head and Evie's as well. But I didn't care. Jay and Carlos won in their first game!

On the field, Jay and Carlos had their arms around each other and Ben, celebrating with so much excitement. When I see Jay next, I'm gonna give him the biggest hug and congratulate him- oh and Carlos too.

Ben broke away from the crowd celebrating, walking up to the announcer and grabbing the mic. I missed what he said first, since I still had my headphones on. Taking them off, the crowd had hushed quite a bit. I turned to Evie to ask her what was happening, and she just shrugged at me.
