"Mama... it hurts," a little girl whimpered in tears with open wounds throughout her arms and legs, cuddled by her mother, who was just as wounded as she was.
"Don't worry, honey. Help will be here soon. Try not to think about the pain too hard, okay?" The mother said as she held her daughter deeper into her chest.
They continued to stand still among the pile of rubble and smoke. Silently, they cowered in fear, knowing that if they made the wrong move, the devil could find them and kill them.
"AGGGH!"
A man cried in agony, causing the woman to scan her surroundings. An ear-screeching laugh of the devil followed in the distance and from its direction, and after it, the sound of a gunshot.
It must've been the devil hunters, she thought.
It was not their first time being put in a situation like this, and they both knew it would not be their last. It was always like this, as long as humans existed, the devils, born from the fears of humans, would appear on earth and wreak havoc upon humankind.
Countless people had lost their lives from devil attacks, and yet, they must continue living, as their fear would only fuel the devil's power even more. Eventually, People called the devil hunters stepped in to lessen these losses of lives.
When a devil is present, the devil hunters will follow suit, and people can only hope that the latter comes out victorious. Such was the exact feeling the woman felt as her eyes were fixed on the silhouettes of the two figures. Then, a slight tapping sound on the ground is heard. Alerted, she broke her gaze from the fight and looked around, hearing the tapping sound slowly getting louder.
Is it a person? Another devil? The frightened woman thought as she saw a silhouette forming and getting closer to her.
She let go of one of the arms from her daughter and inched backward, reaching for any possible weapon she could use for her last stand. Her heart was racing, its pounding becoming even louder than the steps themselves. Then, the wind blew, finally clearing the smoke.
Her eyes widened, relieved, yet still frightened at the same time. Revealed in front of her was a young man with messy dark hair and pale-colored eyes. Patches of dirt and dripping sweat vaguely covered the freckles on his pale skin. Breathing heavily, he had his right hand placed tightly on his chest. While tattered and dirtied, his coat still revealed that it was similar to a doctor's lab coat. However, his whole left sleeve was painted red from what seemed to be his blood.
The man looked at the woman carefully, noticing the daughter in her arms. He closed his eyes and took a long deep breath as his right hand reached for a badge in his chest pocket.
"Izuki Kyoukawa, from the Tokyo Public Safety.. please remain calm, ma'am," The young man said softly.
"I can see that you both are hurt. Can you stand, ma'am?" He continued.
"Y-yes..." The woman stuttered.
"Good," Izuki reached out his arm to her. "Then let's go."
After taking his hand, the three began to make their way out of the wreckage, and once again, smoke started to fill the scenery. Behind them, the devil's screeching sound continued, but it was no longer laughing. It was wailing in pain. The woman turned her back out of morbid curiosity to look at what might happen to the devil, but the smoke clouded her vision.
"Don't worry about it. My senpai, Himeno, and her buddy, Subaru-kun, are taking care of it right now," Izuki said as if he knew what she was thinking. However, rather than satisfying her curiosity, it only sparked another question.
