Skyler

The sun fell through the trees and onto her just right.

It made her skin glow and her hair revealed its true shades.

It was tinted, just slightly in the sun, some shade of red.

It was beautiful.

Here I am smiling like an idiot again.

Without thinking I put my hand out to her.

I instantly smiled sheepishly thinking that was the worst move of my life but instead, she took it and linked my arm in hers.

I glanced at her sidelong and saw her smirking, I instantly felt a rush of heat.

How does she even do that?

Eventually she put my arm down to 'put up her hair'.

The insecure idiot part of me just thought she didn't want to hold my arm anymore.

The other part said maybe my armpits stink?

No matter.

Stuff happens right?

Everything turned out ok for me because when we walked past the dog park a giant dog jumped on the fence and scared the daylights out of Riley.

The part I can't stop thinking about is that instead of just jumping away from the fence, she jumped into me.

She held her arms to her chest and pressed herself against me for a split second until she realized the dog couldn't get us.

It gave me a weird sense of pride and determination at the fact she trusted me to protect her.

When we got to the ice cream place I held the door for her but before she could get very far through the door, a large dude walked right out from around the corner causing her to run dead smack into him.

"Hey, watch it young lady."

"Sorry Sir, I didn't see you coming."

"Yeah whatever." He said waving her off and moving her aside to get through the door.

I could hear her mumbling under her breath.

"What a prick."

"That guy had no right to treat you like that." I said, the anger rising in my voice.

She turned and looked almost surprised.

I think she was surprised that I cared.

Just then I realized that she wasn't expecting me to care, and that gave me a sort of new anger when I thought about her past relationships.

My new mission is to show her that I'm not like the rest of those idiots.

They didn't know what a good thing they had.

"It's alright, people act like that all the time." She said, shrugging.

I felt my frustration continue to rise.

"Who treats you like that?" I said furrowing my eyebrows.

She looked at me for a long moment, then looked down at the number on my shirt, when she snapped her eyes up again to mine, I realized what she was trying to say, but she didn't want to say it.

"The team treats you like that?" My anger was about to snap.

"They just think they're better than everyone, and they drag along their Barbie girlfriends on the cheer team, and they constantly bother me telling me I should join the cheer team because then maybe I'd have a chance, they tease me for being obsessed with things like the fire department and going mudding with the guys, they call me a girly redneck."
