A female dragon, Aine, was born on 17 May 1981 and later learned how to use her magic very well, and soon she was able to transform into a human form, though at first she still had horns, wings and a tail, with scales all over her body. Later she learned how to remove the scales, then the tail, then the wings, and lastly the horns. (Aine means Brilliance, Splendor, Fire and Radiance. Áine is the Irish Celtic goddess of Wealth and Summer.)
She's a Hebridean Black dragon and was cared for by the MacFusty clan. When she was younger she got injured and a young girl of the clan about a year older helped her. The girl was Mairi MacFusty, daughter of Martin MacFusty. Ever since then, they were very close.
When Mairi left to go to Hogwarts at 11 years old, Aine was sad and lonely. She wanted to go with Mairi, so she tried and tried to become like her. When Mairi returned for Christmas, Aine timidly showed her her humanoid form, with scales, horns, wings and a tail. Mairi was shocked, but very happy. She taught Aine how to speak.
Close to the end of the holiday, Aine expressed her desire to go with Mairi, who was very happy about that. She went to ask her father if Aine can go with her, but he refused (I don't know yet if he knew about her humanoid form). Aine and Mairi were both devastated. Mairi suggested Aine become even more human-like, because perhaps if she looked just like a human, she might be allowed to go.
Aine tried her best, but by the easter holidays she had only managed to remove her scales from her human parts. Aine was sad that she didn't progress much, but Mairi was happy that progress was made and she encouraged Aine to continue.
By the start of the summer holidays, Aine had managed to remove her tail as well. Mairi was delighted and she worked together with Aine to help her. Soon her wings were gone as well.
On the morning that Mairi got her booklist, Aine had managed to completely look like a human. They excitedly wrote to Dumbledore and asked if Aine could attend Hogwarts.
Dumbledore had never heard of a dragon being able to attain a human form before, and was greatly interested. He visited them and then asked Aine to perform magic, which she managed to do. He said she could attend Hogwarts, if she goes to Madam Pomfrey for check ups so she can keep track of her health and / or if her human form causes her any problems.
They excitedly went to Diagon Alley and Aine got a wand: Alder, Dragon Heartstring, 12" and Slightly Springy. Ironically the dragon heartstring comes from Aine's grandmother.
Soon after Aine started at Hogwarts in 1992, however, she found out there were indeed some problems in how she becomes human, over time her magic grew weaker, so she had to periodically, about once a month, turn into her dragon form, otherwise she would eventually be unable to do magic at all. Later she learned how to transform and keep her magic stable, but this was only about when she was 17, in her 7th year.
Mairi, as most of the MacFusty clan, was a Hufflepuff. One of the most respected and strongest clans. Aine, however, was a Ravenclaw.
In her seventh year, shortly after she became able to permanently have a human form, she found that she missed Mairi terribly and realised she had feelings for her. She sent a letter to Mairi and asked her to meet her in the Three Broomsticks on the first Hogsmeade weekend.
When Mairi arrived, Aine explained to her that she now had perfect control of her form and could be in human form permanently without any repercussions. Mairi was delighted for her and they hugged happily. While in the hug, Aine faced Mairi and, with great courage, she confessed her feelings. Mairi, although delighted, didn't do anything at first out of fear and worry, but Aine was able to convince her to follow her heart, after which Mairi took a deep breath and kissed Aine, then said she liked her too and asked her to be her girlfriend. Aine accepted.
