Hello, it's your beloved author again! So, I lied about making the last chapter longer, sorry. But this one is going to be longer I promise! I would also like to clarify that she was packing for a really long time and it is now like 4:00. Yes it does not make sense. Deal with it. Once again I hope you have enjoyed the story so far, Thank you for reading!
I jumped out the window and landed on the ground, "Agh!" I twisted my ankle and fell.
"Evelyn! Where are you going?" My father must be in my room now, I need to get up. I try to stand up by leaning on the wall but my leg gives out and I collapse. The pain is unbearable but I can't just give up, I'm so close. I force myself to stand up and I start to limp away. My leg hurts and it's dark outside but since when have I ever let pain stop me? I continue to limp/ run away from my house, tears falling from my eyes and the picture of my mother in my hand. I dropped the dress at some point. I kept hearing the yelling of my father but it stopped after a while.
I switched between running and limping because my leg would hurt too much at times. After at least a few hours of running my legs were too tired and I was in too much pain to continue. I limped into an alley and slumped down against the wall. It was pitch black outside now and I had no idea where I was. I tucked my head into my knees and cried. I cried about my leg, I cried about how cruel my father was, and I cried about the death of my mother. I cried as quietly as I could. I was so tired.
—---------------------------------Flashback/ dream—---------------------------------
"Shut up already!" Papa threw me against the wall "why won't you stop crying!" He kicked me.
"Robert, what are you doing!" Mama ran towards me and tried to pick me up.
"Christ Mary, just let me teach her a lesson for once!" Papa pushed her away.
"Hey!" I heard a voice yell. "Hey are you ok?" the voice said.
End of dream
"Hey!" Someone shook me awake. Oh no, what if it's Papa or that man from the carriage!
"No, don't touch me!" I screamed pushing the person away.
" Woah, ey kid calm down we ain't hea to hurt ya" Another voice spoke up. I looked around. There were two people! The strangers probably saw the fear on my face because they backed up.
The first one stepped closer and smiled.
"Hi, my name is Skittery" He said softly "And this is my lil brotha Lucky" he gestured at the younger boy next to him.
"Hey" Lucky waved at me. "We heard ya cryin and wanted to make sure that use was ok" Lucky said. He paused , "are ya?" I didn't answer. Could I trust these boys?
"Hey luck, why don't we take her back with us?" Skittery looked at me "ya good wit that?" I nodded. "Perfect!" The two boys started walking out of the alley. I tried to stand up and follow but my leg wouldn't let me. I whimpered and looked down tears welling up in my eyes again. The two boys stopped and turned around. Skittery started to walk back over to me, hand up in the air. He's going to hit me! I knew I couldn't trust them! I covered my head with my hands and the crying grew stronger. I felt a hand on my shoulder, "um you ok?" The older boy asked. I shook my head. He looked down at my leg and back at his brother. He turned and bent his knees so he was in a squatted position. I looked at him confused. "Hop on" he gestured to his back. "Lucky be a doll and help the poor kid ya" He said in a somewhat annoyed tone. Lucky walked over and gave me a boost onto Skitterys back.
On the way to wherever we were going Lucky wouldn't stop pointing out all the small landmarks and details every time we walked by a place he knew "that's my favorite dinna' place and ova there is the best sellin' spot you'll find!" He looked so happy talking about his home.
"Lucky stop harassing the kid," Skittery laughed. They were both happy.
"Oh and here we are!" Lucky pointed ahead "Home sweet home." I had been so focused on thinking that I hadn't even realized we were on a bridge. I also remembered that I didn't even know where we were.
"Excuse me" I whispered into Skitterys ear. He looked back at me slightly startled "Um where are we?" He looked even more startled when I asked that question.
"Where are we?" he smiled and looked back ahead "Well kid, we're in Brooklyn"
