I would like to warn that I know pretty much zero brooklyn newsie names, so with the help of my wonderful friend I am creating my own! Dont judge, love you all!!
"Brooklyn." That's all I heard, I had never been to Brooklyn before. My house was at least a few hours away, but I ran all the way here. "Oh yeah, hey kid, what's yer name?" Skittery asked me over his shoulder.
"Evelyn, My name is Evelyn Hoff." I said quietly. Papa never liked my name.
"That's a pretty name" Skittery smiled. Nobody has said that since Mama died.
"Ey Skits!" I looked ahead to see two boys running towards us from the other side of the bridge. Skittery started walking faster and his smile grew wider. The two boys looked pretty much the same and gave the same look when they got close enough to see me on Skitterys back.
"Um, Skits I know its a bit dark but i'm pretty sure i'm seein' a lil goil on ya back." the other boy said, walking around Skittery to get a better look at me.
"Yeah, why do ya have a kid on ya back Skits?" The first one asked, following his brother. I leaned closer to Skittery not wanting the other boys to get any closer.
"Geez guys I thought you had at least some manners" Skittery lifted me from his back and held me in front of him instead. "Evelyn, this is Nicks and Sticks, the very rowdy and annoying twins." Skittery gestured at the two boys in front of us. Nicks and Sticks bowed.
"Thanks for the marvous introduction Skits." Nicks said, smiling and looking up from his bowed position. Skittery laughed at the mispronunciation but said nothing. Sticks grabbed Nick's arm and nodded his head towards where they came. Nicks looked at Skittery, eyes wide like he was trying to say something. Skittery sighed.
"Yeah it's my fault, lets go before I get ya's into more trouble" Skittery smiled tiredly and started walking towards the end of the bridge.
Once we arrived at the end of the bridge I saw more boys gathered around outside a building.
When the boys saw Skittery a rush of murmurs flooded over the crowd. The sea of boys broke apart in the middle, either looking at me and Skittery or looking at each other.
"Well, well, well." A shorter boy in the middle of the crowd took a step forward towards us. The boy looked scary, much scarier than Skittery did. I frowned and looked up. Skittery smiled down at me and placed me down, holding my hand and making sure to hold me up so i didn't hurt my leg again. "Look whos finally back, Skittery what has i told ya about coming' back late?" The shorter boy's blue eyes pierced Skittery's, who looked back just as fierce. I on the other hand didn't dare to look the boy in the eyes.
"Send word" Skittery spit. He looked annoyed and I squeezed his hand. All these people were making me nervous. He squeezed back and smiled at me again. I wish he didn't because the shorter boy seemed to notice me then.
"And whos dis'?" The shorter boy walked up to me and knelt down in front of me forcing me to hold eye contact. He looked at me intensely, like he was trying to read my entire life story. All the other boys crowded in behind him, stared at me and whispered. They all were staring almost as intensely as the shorter boy in front of me. But none could beat Papa in the intense staring category. Skittery was no longer squeezing my hand, Everybody was looking at me and there was nothing I could do about it. The shorter boy continued to stare at me with a some what disgusted expression on his face. He thinks im weird. He thinks of me the same way Papa does. I tried my best to hold the tears back but it didn't work. I broke eye contact and looked down at the ground. Tears streaming down my face. I didn't look up until I felt Skittery let go of my hand and walk over to Lucky.
The shorter boy kept staring at me. So did all the others. Skittery wouldnt look at me and neither would Lucky. I couldn't take it anymore. My leg hurt so much, I have nowhere else to go and everybody here seemed to hate me. I looked down again and tried to wipe my eyes with my hands but the tears wouldn't stop coming. I tried to be quiet but every once and a while a sob would escape and I wouldn't be able to control it. Everything was silent. Everybody else was absolutely quiet. I couldn't stop crying until, I felt someones hand on my shoulder. I flinched but relaxed after taking a deep breath. I looked up to see the shorter boy with a remorseful smile on his face. He opened his mouth and closed it again. He looked around and closed his eyes and sighed.
"Ya ok?" He asked. The crowd of boys around us gasped and murmured. I didn't answer. "Its ok to cry sometimes, but pretty little kids like you shouldnt have a reason to" His smile became more genuine and he continued "So could ya try to stop cryin' for me?" I looked at him with surprise and nodded. He stood up as soon as I did and looked over at Skittery. "We ain't done but I have some more important things to do." The shorter boy picked me up and carried me inside "ey jumpa' come in wit me and take care of the kids leg will ya?" Another boy came out from the crowd and followed us in with Lucky and Skittery close behind. "The rest of youse straight to bed."
I was carried inside and brought into a room. The shorter boy sat me on the bed and leaned against the door frame. The boy that supposedly went by Jumper came in and looked at my leg.
"Its not broken but it looks pretty bad. I think it got worse from some kind of pressure on it but in a few weeks she'll be good as new" Skittery smiled at Lucky who did a little jump up and down. Jumper wiped the blood away from my ankle. I flinched every once and a while but overall it didn't hurt that bad. The shorter boy kept staring at me and eventually dragged Skittery outside tot alk to him. Once they left Lucky sat next to me on the bed.
"I've always wanted a lil sista, all i've got here is a bunch of brothas." He smiled at me.
"Are you all related here?" I looked at lucky confused and he started laughing.
"Not by blood, but were the only family we'se got." He looked sad for a second but perked up as soon as Skittery came back in, followed by the shorter boy. Skittery kept his distance but smiled.
"Evelyn this is spot." He gestured to the shorter boy who nodded. "Spot wants to know how ya got hurt and why your not with ya Mama and Papa." Spot nodded again. I didn't know what to say. Jumper must have felt the room tension because he finished bandaging and left. I followed him with my eyes wishing I could just get up and leave with him.
"Mama..." I trailed off as soon a i started speaking. Mama had nothing to do with this. "Papa, I- I mean my father." The two boys didn't take that word change very well because they both tensed up and looked at each other. "He didn't want me anymore." Surprisingly I didn't start crying again. All I did was stare.
"Lucky get the goil some of your smallest clothes." Spot said breaking through the silence and opening the door. Lucky ran out. "Skittery shes gonna sleep with you tonight." Skittery smiled and walked out too. I was left alone with Spot. He walked over to the bed I was sat on and grabbed my hand. He smiled "Alright, I betta gets ya ready for bed." He picked me up "Ya got a bit day ahead of ya," He grabbed the cap off his head and put it on mine "Lil miss Newsie."
