"Have you packed your lunch box?"
"Yep"
"School books?"
"Yep"
"Pencil case?"
"Yep"
"Sunscreen?"
"Mum? It's the middle of winter, why do I need sunscreen?"
"Just checking. Are you eating gum?"
"no" I lie. She raises her eyebrows and her brown eyes question me. Daring me to lie again to her face. I hold my hands up in surrender "Fine! I'll throw it out" I say and dramatically walk at turtle pace to the bin.
Cigarette butts in the bin. Lots and lots. Agh. Agh agh agh. I spit my gum forcefully and walk away. Out of sight out of mind.

Caitlin came with Mum and I to the entrance of Burke High, my new school. Mum sniffles as I say my goodbyes and start along the driveway to the main entrance. It's huge. Of course I saw it on my introduction day but it seems way bigger now. I uncomfortably walk over to a oversized lady with round classes behind a white and brown desk, typing furiously on a laptop.
"Is this where you get your schedule?" A deep voice behind me gives me a momentary heart attack. I turn around to see a boy, about the same age as me, taller than me, but only by a little. Light brown hair and stunning green eyes. "Uhh I think so?" I answer.
"Name?" The fat lady asks him
"Oh uh, Oliver Cooper" he says

OLIVER

"Name?" The lady with round glasses asks me.
"Oh uh, Oliver Cooper" I stutter
"Here you go" she says, thrusting a piece of paper at me.
"Name?" She asks the girl impatiently.
"Riley Dean" the girl/boy says and the lady gives her a piece of paper too.
"Umm, I kinda thought you were a boy" I tell her embarrassed. She smiles at me and says "Everybody does, I don't blame you. Plus it doesn't help with this short hair"

Her hair is strawberry blonde, cut into a pixie cut. She has the most amazing blue eyes, bright and bold. Her fringe was swept to the right and hung across her right eye. She suits her name. Well.
"So uh," I start "what's your first subject?"
"English" Riley says, like it was the most horrible thing in the world. "Same!" I tell her, waving my schedule around. Stupid! "Well uh, I guess we better got going then?" Riley says, gesturing toward a corridor. "Right. But I have no idea where I'm going" she laughs at this. I guess she's one of the people that enjoys everything. I like those people.
