I closed my eyes and lay still. Invisible butterflies floated franticly around my insides, making me feel giddy, warm, happy, nervous and excited all at once. I heard the sound of the door unlock and big heavy boots being scraped across the doormat. "Dad!" I yell and bolt toward the door and into his open arms. Caitlin even emerged from her room downstairs for a hug and friendly hello. He smelt like smoke. Strong, painful smoke. "Hey Riley Wiley" he cooed, rubbing my hair.
"Dad can I go over to my friends house for dinner? Pleaseeeee?" I ask quickly.
"Sure, what the heck" he rolls his eyes.
"Thanks dad!" I say and kiss him on the check, grab my nicest sweeter and warmest beanie, then rush out the door into the brisk, cold wind."Cute beanie!" Julia remarks when I arrive. "Hello to you to" I say. Lucy was looking over her shoulder, blowing cautiously on her wet, pink nails. "Come in! Come in! Come in!" Julia ushered me inside, where I managed to catch a glimpse of Oliver, Cody, and another boy that didn't look to familiar. Just then I heard Cody say his name. It's James. I know him! He's in my history class, and he sits next to me, he's funny as! James Spooner I think. Julia and Lucy lead me down stairs into a small room, polaroid photos hung on walls along with posters of the hottest, popular celebrities and other photos of family, friends, beautiful sunsets, sparkling bluey greeney oceans, and animals. Her bed was tucked in the corner and neatly made with a wide window framed with light blue curtains.
"Sit" Lucy says, pointing to a blue chair in the far corner. I sit and cross my legs in front of me. "It's Oliver isn't it" Julia and Lucy both say at the same time, like they've practiced over and over.
"Maybe" I answer not surprised that they are bringing the subject up.
"Really?"
"Yep" I lie. They stare at me intensely and intentionally.
"Swear to god?" Lucy finally asks.
"No" I lie again looking down. I couldn't swear to god. It's rude.
"So you do like him" Julia concludes.
"Fine, fine, fine you got me" I confess embarrassed. And this time I wasn't lying. "Dinners ready!" A cheerful voice called from upstairs. Is this a good thing or a terrible thing?
