We went back to Elizabeth’s room and finished our dinner, with jokes and conversations. Everyone began to say their goodbye’s and leave, except for me. Something about Elizabeth kept nagging at me. The way she looked when she laughed at Santiago’s silly jokes, and smiled. It seemed so familiar to me. I had to get to the bottom of this, or it would drive me nuts every time I was around her.

“Good night Jeremiah.” Again that smile.

“Elizabeth I have to talk to you.”

“Jeremiah, I don’t have time for jokes.”

     “This is important.”

     “You sound serious, what’s wrong?”

“Why do seem so familiar to me?”

“What do you mean? I’ve never met you before.”

“Maybe you did, think back to when you were little.” It all began to pour back to me.

     “Jeremiah I can’t.”

     “Just try, please.”

She closed her eyes. “I can’t Jeremiah.”

“Why? Why don’t you remember coming to the beach with a little boy who was losing his eye sight?”

“Ugh, my head, it hurts so badly!” She sat down on her bed and rubbed her forehead.

“Whoa, are you okay?” I put my hands out in caution towards her, as if she was about to fall.

She removed her hands from her head and opened her eyes, she was breathing heavily. “I’m fine; phew that was a big one.”

     “What happened?”

“Okay, I haven’t told anyone this, not even Amelia. It’s okay though because; I have a feeling that you know me even better than her.”

     “Alright don’t make things creepy.”

She smiled, but it quickly vanished. “When I was 5 years old I was brain washed by Mr. Fanon. Whenever I remember something from before that time, I get a headache.”

     “Who’s Mr. Fanon?”

     “He was my caretaker.”

“Then how did we know each other?”

“Mr. Fanon and Mr. Jones were partners in their experiments and sometimes when Mr. Fanon couldn’t take care of me he would hand me over to Mr. Jones. Mr. Jones would have you so we would play. I remember everything now. Thank You Jeremiah.” She gave me her trademark tiny grin.

“Wait, how come I don’t know this?”

She shrugged. “I have always had superb memory.”

“Do you remember when we went to the beach?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

“Come on, you got to get over it.”

“Fine but after this you have to leave. This isn’t very proper.”

     “It’s a deal.”

     “I just remember huge waves.”

“There was nothing in the water, no body no ‘scary man’ as you called it then.”

She rolled her eyes. “I saw him! I’m telling the truth, he was telling me to come with him!”

“How come I didn’t see him?”

“I don’t know maybe you weren’t looking in the right spot.”

“We were standing right by each other!”

“It’s not just that time. I have been to the beach other times and it’s always the same.”

“What does this man look like?”

“He looks a little like Santiago, they have the same build. This guy had blonde hair, and eyes like mine. He has a friendly, smart face. He is wearing a tattered white button-up shirt, some worn slacks, and no shoes.”

“Sounds like a wedding gone wrong.” I laughed.

Elizabeth gave me an I’m-not-joking look.

“Sorry, so why haven’t you listened to him?”

“What kind of question is that? The answer is obvious.”

“I mean, don’t you want to get over this? The only way is to confront this guy, and find out what’s going on.”

“It could be a death trap!”

“You’re smart, I’m sure that would find your way out of this pickle.”

She said nothing and stared intently at the floor.

     “Well bye Elizabeth.”

She waved but did not look at me.

I walked out and closed the door behind me. I made way to my room.
