The early morning sun poured a golden light across the hood of the Cadillac as Duke pulled up to the school curb, engine humming low.

Angel sat in the passenger seat, arms crossed, eyes fixed on the growing crowd of students lining up at the front entrance. His jaw flexed tight.

Duke put the car in park and leaned back in his seat, watching his little brother without a word. He didn't rush him. Angel was nervous—but too proud to say it.

"I could've waited till Monday to start school," Angel muttered, finally breaking the silence with a cold stare in Duke's direction.

"You'll be alright," Duke replied, calm, pulling his phone from his front pocket.

Without hesitation, Angel threw up his middle finger at him.

"I saw that, lil nigga," Duke said, not even glancing up, too focused on the flood of unread messages from Marie.

Angel rolled his eyes but didn't deny it.

Duke should've been annoyed, but truthfully, his attention wasn't fully here. Ever since he and Brooklyn had gotten close—too close—he'd been slipping. Missing drops.

Skipping the shop. Ignoring calls. He wasn't built like that. He was the type to grind through the pain, to bury emotion under movement. But being around her slowed everything down. Softened something he hadn't even realized was still alive inside him.

"It's eight o'clock," Duke reminded, thumb still scrolling.

Angel sucked his teeth. "If you want me gone, just say that."

"I want you gone," He said looking him straight in the eyes before going back to the phone.

"You just so rude" He mumbles to himself as he opens the car door while grabbing his book bag off the floor.

Duke shrugged finally putting down his phone and starting the car back up. He looked over at Angel who was getting out of the car, and he opens his mouth to speak but was interrupted by the door slamming close.

"Damn nigga" He cussed as he rolled down the window which grabbed Angel's attention "I wasn't done talkin"

"So you see what I deal with on a daily" he threw his bag on his shoulder.

"You know what, you got it" He began rolling up the window.

"Alright chill" Angel shouted making Duke stop "What was you finna say?"
