{Cheng'an, Day 5)

This must be what heaven feels like.

I was back in Liang, where I belonged with my father and grandmother. My dearest friends, Jun Tao and Ming were also alive and well. I have never felt more at peace. Everything was perfect.

And then that moment ended.

As soon as I awoke, I was hit with a throbbing headache. What happened to me?

Images flooded my mind as I remembered being accused of bringing the Li family bad luck. My skin still felt raw from the Taoist master's whip, and the smug look on Madam's face at my misery. It was all coming back to me now.

Minde and Changru pleaded for mercy on my behalf, but Prime Minister Li still was not swayed. My heart clenched painfully at the thought of Old Madam offering herself up for me. Chiyun Rou tried to have me killed in those mountains. The memories were too vivid to forget.

What I didn't remember was how I got here. Or, worst of all, the strange man lying beside me.

Despicable. Men are desperate to violate a young lady. Well, he'll never know what hit him.

I shoved him to the ground as hard as I could. His eyes flew open in confusion. I had to maintain the upper hand.

I threw my pillow in his direction, hitting him square in the face. "Pervert! How dare you take my purity! Where is your honor? Your dignity?"

Before he could escape, I kicked him in the groin. "Even if you take my life today, I will surely put you through hell in my next."

He groaned in pain. I almost pulled out my dagger when he raised his arms in self-defense.

"Miss! I promise, it's not what you think. I found you in the woods and brought you here after seeing that you were injured. Physician Liu can confirm that you've been unconscious for three days. He treated your wounds and you've been recovering ever since."

I eyed him suspiciously. "Why were you in my bed?"

"You were so exhausted after the procedure. I was afraid to wake you, so I let you lay on me until you came to. Miss, I have always slept alone. I must have fallen asleep accidentally. I give you my word that I was a true gentleman. You remained chaste."
