Tuoba Yu

{Cheng'an, Day 30}

Over the last several days, Weiyoung and I had fallen into a pattern. In the mornings, the two of us shared breakfast together before doing separate tasks. Then, we left the clinic to explore the city at night. It was a peaceful change from the bustle of royal life. Although unexpected, it was something I had come to love.

Suddenly, the movement of the curtains caught my attention, shaking me from my thoughts. It was subtle, and yet............ I felt like I was being watched.

Quietly, I pulled out my sword and crept towards the window. When I opened it, I realized it was one of the messenger hawks from the palace. The creatures were used to deliver secret messages, which meant the sender was giving private information.

After closing my window and feeding the hawk, I carefully read the message:

Your Highness,

After finding Yu Ling without you, I realized something must have happened. The servant that you sent gave me your message and remains in the dark. I will travel to Cheng'an as soon as possible so we can return to Ping City. By the time you get this, I should be in Cheng'an by nightfall. As of now, Prince Dongping remains unaware of your whereabouts. Furthermore, we have a new opportunity to strike. I will share more information when we meet in person.

Your servant,

Cheng An

I ripped the letter into pieces and threw it away. It was too risky to leave it lying around. I chuckled as I imagined Tuoba Han's reaction to my return. My brother had to know I wouldn't give up the throne without a fight.

So why was I not more excited about going home?

Outside my window, I saw Weiyoung watering the flowers. Despite her frail state, she seemed content. The longer I stared at her, the harder I could deny the obvious truth:

I didn't want to leave because of her.

For the first time in forever, I felt seen and at peace. With Weiyoung, I was not Prince Nan'an, or an illegitimate child. I was just Tuoba Yu.
