Weiyoung

The palace was beautiful, with tapestries and golden statues surrounding it. I couldn't help but be intimidated by the intricate carvings and massive pillars. It was much larger than the castle in Liang. My heart ached at the thought of my beloved home.

When I was still a princess and grandmother and father were still alive. I wondered what they would say if they could see me now. Would they be proud? Disappointed? Scared?

In the distance, I caught a glimpse of Minfeng, Changle, and Chiyun Rou in the the carriage to my left. Despite my best efforts, my carefully masked anger began rising to the surface.

The people responsible for murdering Weiyoung and my family were closer than ever. I wondered how quickly I could pull out my dagger.

And slit each of their throats, one by one.

I took a deep breath to calm myself. I couldn't be hasty. Then, my family's sacrifices would all be in vain. If I wanted to survive in this complicated household, I must be smart and strong.

Chiyun Rou. You haven't seen the last of me yet. Just wait and see.

But I forced these thoughts from my mind. This was not the time to think of such things. I must focus on getting through today. Despite the palace's beauty, it will never change what it truly is.

A prison.

"Weiyoung, are you alright?"

I snapped out of my thoughts once I heard Changru's voice.

"Of course, Changru, I'm just a little nervous about being at the palace. There are so many people here, and I don't want to mess up."

"I understand, Weiyoung. I was also nervous when I first came here years ago. But I'll be with you the whole time, don't worry."

I squeezed her hand and nodded. As long as I kept my head down, everything would be fine.

Everyone was sitting in the courtyard. Changru, Changle, and I were next to several other girls. I observed the guests and noticed most of them were noblewomen. The Crown Princess is probably searching for a consort for her son. But if that was the case, why invite me? Surely, she wouldn't want her son to have an illegitimate as his legal wife. I tried not dwell on it.

"I am bored and desire some entertainment. Is anyone willing to perform a song for me?" The Crown Princess asked. The ladies whispered among themselves, encouraging each other to do it. I nudged Changru.

She smiled and rose. Unfortunately, my sister did too.
