Link came to a halt with Navi near the giant, buttress like roots of a massive tree. IT was easily the size of the village, or perhaps a castle, though Link had to admit his image of what a castle could be was hazy, having never seen one.
"Great Deku Tree, we're back!" said Navi.
Link heard a creaking sort of groan and the rustling of leaves, looking up, towards the sound of the disturbance Link gasped. Having never met the guardian spirit of Kokiri Forest in "person," Link was startled to see that the massive tree bore a crude face. Two vaguely horizontal bars of thick bark gave the impression of bushy eyebrows and a similar set beneath suggested to Link that the tree's "face" bore a mouth that was obscured by a thick mustache. above the mustache but below the brows, a bulb of trunk seemed to protrude to produce a nose.
With another rumble the tree began to speak.
"Oh, Navi, Thou hast returned," it said. "Welcome, Link. Listen carefully to what I, the Deku Tree, am about to tell thee."
Each sentence seemed to trail off. This plus the tree's antiquated way to speaking gave Link and impression that the tree must be hundreds, if not thousands, of years old.
"Thy slumber these past nights must have been restless... full of nightmares..." the tree went on.
"As the servants of evil gain strength, a vile climate pervades the land and causes nightmares in those sensitive to it- verily thou hast felt it."
Link sensed a change in the tree that he could not place his finger on. It was as if the ancient forest spirit had come to some kind of decision or his reason for summoning him. "Link... The time as come to test thy courage..." It began. "I have been cursed, and I need you to break the curse with your wisdom and courage. Dost thou have courage enough to undertake this task?"
Link nodded, gazing up at the tree unable to fathom how anything he could do would possibly help such a mighty being. Upon nodding there were yet more powerful creak and to his immense shock, the tree opened its mouth. That was the only way link could describe it- a wooded lip, twice as long as he was tall lowered itself from under the "mustache" and dropped all the way to the forest floor, the tree groaning all the while. At last the tree's mouth was fully open, as if in an exaggerated silent scream- the dark cavern of his mouth before Link.
"Enter, brave Link and thou too, Navi..." said a voice from deep within the shadows within the tree, "Navi the fairy, thou must aid Link- and Link, when Navi speaks listen well to her words of wisdom."
The tree fell silent. Despite being in its presence, Link felt strangely alone in the face of his task. Cautiously, the walked forward with Navi at his shoulder and together they entered the gaping maw of the Deku Tree.
