"Are they... dead?" Manuel approached cautiously, while Gabriel reviewed the first body.
"I feel his breathing" he touched the monk's face carefully "but he is weak, and his skin is very cold and pale. If they are not attended in time, they will die."
The other boy swallowed.
"What do you think happened to them?"
He looked at them carefully and replied:
"The curse may have drained their life force."
"And what are we going to do?"
"Search for survivors."
His brother frowned and grimaced.
"In other words," he grumbled and gestured, "look for Marie."
"Is there a problem?" He growled.
"She may not even be alive!"
"She is" he clenched his fists tightly "if Ponvi is here, it's because not everyone was affected."
"What if the curse is not interested in mongrels?" He crossed his arms.
"It's a wolf, and we must move."
He turned his back on him and began to run, next to the cub, jumping both bodies and branches. He heard his brother following after muttering something, but he ignored him. Marie was alive. She had to be.
A female scream echoed down the hall. The cub whimpered and growled.
Marie?
He quickened his pace even more and turned the next corner of the hall. He stopped dead.
"Noooo! Somebody help me, please!"
The branches were suffocating the body of a girl... with black hair.
It's not Marie.
Not knowing whether to be relieved or worried about it, he just moved forward and attacked. The thick trunks recoiled with each whiplash, and before they could return, a spiked sphere controlled by a chain struck them. Manuel had come up behind him and was spinning the morning star from the other end to give it momentum.
"Put her away, Gabriel! If it bounces, it will hit her!"
He made a face. He didn't like being ordered around, but the fact that his brother was taking initiative distracted him. He put his whip in the harness and went to grab the branch encircling the girl's chest with both hands.
He was dimly aware of the cub snarling after him and nibbling at the claws that reached for his feet. Very good, boy, he thought to himself and turned to the girl.
"Don't struggle," he told her, and pulled hard.
He tried again and again, but it was useless. His brother's gun struck the log next to him and he had to move out of the way so it wouldn't hit him. Growling in frustration, he reached for his whip and stabbed with the end of the haft. Since it was blunt, it took him three tries to chip it and another three to break through. Something spurted out and splashed on his face and clothes. He brushed some of it out of his eyes, easily pushing the piece of wood aside and pulling the girl out.
"Done!" Manuel yelled.
With a chain in each hand, he flew the spheres like extensions of his arms around her. He let out a scream and hurled them like fists against the branches. Seeing themselves hit and splintered over and over again, they recoiled. The boy continued frantically until the reddish liquid came out again and the logs moved far enough away.
