It seemed that both the weather and Marie's heart would remain icy for a long time.
"You can't sleep either?" Julia settled next to her, whispering.
Like her, she was in a clean nightgown they would have been provided with, wrapped in pristine white sheets, in a lazy attempt to keep warm.
"The truth?" she answered with a raspy voice "I don't think anyone can fall asleep tonight."
She could hear the murmurs and sobs of those who were hiding under the covers.
"Before, we weren't in our beds" said Marie "but it was fun. Now... I don't know if one day we will be able to return to our bedrooms, or recover our belongings."
"I heard" her sister commented "that they will move our quarters to another building" and she lowered her voice even more "the one in the west wing of the campus, right next to the apprentices. Is it not wonderful? You will be closer to your knight!"
Marie pursed her lips and curled into a ball.
"Oh, come on," Julia sighed, "you're not still thinking about his little outburst, are you?"
"I don't know, Julia, so many things have happened that I still find it hard to digest."
"You can think about all that after you've rested. And I promise I'll help you find the answers myself."
Marie snorted:
"With more secrets?"
Julia straightened up, turning serious, raising her left hand.
"No more secrets, it's an oath."
She still wasn't sure whether to trust, but truthfully, she was too tired and had too many questions.
"He was really angry."
"You know he wasn't mad at you, right? He was really worried about you."
"So much that he lost his temper destroying the tree."
"That's how it is. But what did you expect from a warrior like him? You've seen him in action before, you know his life is not a fairy tale."
"His brothers seem different, somehow."
"Well... yes" Julia blushed "they are... interesting. But do you like any of them? I mean, in the same way as Gabriel?"
"No."
"You see, all boys are different."
"Like Tomas, for example" her comment made her sister's cheeks red. "But... I don't know how to explain it, what I felt at that moment and I was... for the first time I was really scared... of him."
Julia took a moment to answer:
"I do not blame you. But you know? He was the first to notice..."
"And he walked away" she sobbed "he didn't even hear my voice. I can only think that maybe he doesn't want to see me again... I really am selfish! I haven't even thought about the fact that I was the target of the curse, or who could hate me so much to do something like that. All I think is that I want to see him!"
A bundle next to both of them stirred, showing Aniza's messy reddish hair, who had been dozing for a long time as if the world did not exist. In her arms, the cub looked back at them, with golden eyes worried about his owner, while keeping her little sister company.
Marie smiled at him and rubbed the fur behind his dark circles, to which he wagged his tail.
"At least someone has managed to rest" Julia adjusted her braid so that it wouldn't get stuck under her body. "I already made you a promise, Marie. We will seek the answers, no more secrets. But we must recover first. As for Gabriel, I stand by what I said before: you must talk to him, he also needs to recover, and he needs to listen to what you have to say. In the meantime, lie down and sleep, tomorrow will be a long day."
With heavy eyelids and not wanting to think much more, Marie nodded.
She had started to get comfortable when she heard a tapping on the window. At first, she was scared, but seeing the silhouette behind the curtain, she gasped and ran towards it, dodging the sleeping bodies of her sisters. Reaching the frame, she opened it, letting in the minty night breeze.
However, instead of seeing her knight, she found, hanging from the handle, the bag that she had taken with the first-aid kit to search for the tree, just in case. Although the packaging was empty, she found a small and rough note, which someone had tried to fold neatly. The handwriting, however, had been drawn by a trembling hand.
"Thank you"
She brought the items to her chest with both hands, they were still warm. For this reason, she peered into the shadows, from the balcony where she was, the leaves of the grove swaying furiously.
And between them, the flashes of a robe and brown hair, on a tall figure.
Gabriel! She wanted to scream, but she stopped herself because she might wake up her sisters, and get them both in trouble.
Instead, her hands moved to her lips, where she had that note, as she looked at her beloved knight.
Walking away from her.
But she didn't know that, nearby, a young girl smiled innocently.
"Thank you for helping me invoke the curse. I promise to pay you when we meet in the other world."
The red-tinged metal dagger flashed in her hand and withdrew, leaving the ring of blood growing around the white-robed body.
Nooooo Gabyyyyy come baaaacccckkk!!!! TT_TT
