Damian and I were in the car headed towards the library. All that I could think about was that stupid rabbit and how it bit me. I was starting to get a bit worried because the bite actually got swollen and it started to burn intensely. Damian was driving so I didn't really want to distract him from the road. The whole ride was pretty much quiet. The only thing that we heard the whole ride over to the library was the sound of the engine as his car was on.
Our local library was a huge three story building. The lowest level was underground which was where they had all the children's literacy books. They also had a computer lab, a board game room, small tables and chairs, a reading area with bean bags and stuffed animals, and a nice kid friendly activity room for story time and arts and crafts. Trust me, that floor was extremely, over-the-top colorful. It was usually a pretty cheerful, peaceful, and quiet place. The main floor featured the information desk, general textbooks, non-fiction information, magazines, newspapers, and I guess what little kids would classify as "adult" books. Great authors such as Dan Brown, Sandra Brown, Jodi Picoult, and many others filled the shelves on this floor. This floor featured a conference room, a computer lab, tables and chairs, and off to the left there was a coffee room in case anyone wanted to relax on the sofas in there. Of course, people weren't allowed to bring the coffee out of the coffee room. The top floor was were all the "teen" books were. This floor in particular featured multiple glass door study rooms, a conference room, a computer lab, an area with sofas so people could sit down to read, a HUGE map that covered an entire wall, tables and chairs, magazines, and enough books to satisfy your sweet tooth for a good Teen Fiction book or your usual reference books(non-fiction). Once we got up to the top floor, Damian and I decided to borrow a study room.
Each room had electrical outlets, a big table, and depending on how many people there were was the number of chairs you were provided. We settled down and I brought out my pencil, eraser, markers, ruler, and tape. Meanwhile, Damian connected his laptop to one of the outlets and sat down at the opposite side of me. He brought the big piece of cardboard and I brought the supplies. Perfect! Then to my dismay, the bite started burning again. "Ouch!" I couldn't help but cringe at the pain. I started to think that maybe the rabbit had given me rabies or something. Rabbits can't be poisonous, can they? Damian came over to my side and took a look at my hand. It ws even more swollen now than before. I was truly starting to get terrified as to what was happening. "You know what? This looks like it's asking a visit to the clinic. Come on, we can get together tomorrow after-school and do the project. You're health is more important right now. How did it end up like this anyways?"
He started packing all of our things up before I even had the chancer to tell him. "I heard some thumps in the attic and I went to look. When I got up there there I found a rabbit but when I tried to pick it up it bit my hand and it ran away."
"Well don't worry, alright Elisa? Everything is going to be fine."
We left the library and he carried all of my things into the trunk of his car. I got in the front co-pilot seat holding onto my hand. Damian rushed over to my door and closed it. He then got into his seat and before I knew it, we were on our way to the clinic. "Did you see if the rabbit had foam coming out of it's mouth or something?"
His words sounded shaken as if he was very nervous. "No, it didn't have any foam or anything."
When we got to the clinic, Damian got off the car in a rush and opened my door. He closed it when I got off and we went in to the building. All I could smell was rubbing alcohol. It was bugging my nose and me. I haven't liked the smell of rubbing alcohol since I was 5 and I got my foot stuck on an electric gate. My foot was bleeding and they disinfected my foot at the hospital. It stung so bad, my mom said that 6 nurses had to hold me down during the process. Damian went to the front desk to sign me in and walked back to sit down next to me once he was finished. "Are you nervous?"
His worry was genuine. I felt so close to him, I couldn't help but blush and rest my head on his shoulder. I responded," Not that much, you being here really makes me feel a lot better."
"Elisa Gutierrez?"
The nurse called my name. Damian kissed my forehead before we got up to step into the office. There was a door connecting the waiting room and another hallway. There were about 6 rooms and 3 of them were occupied. The nurse had me step onto the scale, took my weight and height, and then sent me off to room 4. Room 4 had posters and posters and more posters plastered on the wall. It was quite colorful indeed. The examination bed was right beside the door and the cabinets and sink were right beside the bed. Damian and I sat down on the chairs at the back of the room. After about what seemed like an eternity (10 minutes) the doctor finally came in, white lab coat and all."So what brings you here today?"
His voice was crackled, and by the looks of it he was already in his 60's. He must've been at lunch before he came in. There was a tiny piece of spinach in between his teeth. I felt like laughing but I managed to keep it in. "Well doc, Elisa got bitten by a rabbit this morning and she said it's been bothering her all day. As you can see, it's pretty swollen up"
Damian had beatin' me to it. "Well it does look pretty swollen. Tell you what, I'll prescribe you some antibiotics and if the swelling hasn't gone down by tomorrow come back to my office and we'll see what we can do."
"OK thanks doc! Have a good day!"
Damian rushed me out of the room and towards the office. The nurse pulled out my file and gave us the bill. Damian being the extreme gentleman he is payed my bill. I just took 2 lollipops from beside the window that connected the hallway and the office. We got out of that stinky building and headed home afterwords. Thankfully, my mom had left me her debit card with a $50 limit. It was enough to buy my antibiotics and to buy a couple of sodas. When we left Walmart we went back to my house and watched movies the rest of the afternoon. Even though I was in pain, I had never felt happier in my whole life.
