Chapter 27: Game Day

Ana's POV

I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock going off and sat up in bed. "Game day." I thought to myself and got out of bed to change into my school clothes. I woke up to see a good morning text message from Luke as well as my parents. I open Luke's and wish him a good morning as well. Just as I was about to open the text messages from my parents my door swings open, "Ana! Wow you've gotten taller! How long has it been?" Selena asks me, but I ignore her question and go to hug her instead. "Sel! I've missed you so much." She hugs me back tightly. "I've missed you too Ana. How are Calum and Michael doing? And how is that new boy you've been seeing?" She asks me like a billion questions a second. "Can we talk about it later? I'm going to be late for school." I tell her. "Yeah sure I have to unpack my things anyways. I'll be at your game." She tells me and a smile and give her a thumbs up. "I can always count on you Sel." I tell her then get dressed and get my things for school then head out the door. Lately Michael has been driving Sam to school while I drive Luke so I get in my car and head to Luke's house. I drive with my thoughts scattered all over the place. I park in his driveway then text him to let him know where I'm at. I smile as I see him come out of his house looking good as per usual. He gets in the car and kisses me on the cheek. "Morning Ana." I smile at him. "Morning Luke." I tell him then drive to school and bite my lip as I think about things while I drive. "So what are you thinking about Ana? Don't be nervous about the game. You'll do amazing." He tells me with a hint of nervousness in his voice as well. I scrunch my eyebrows while looking at the road, "Do you have something that you want to tell me Luke? Why are you so nervous?" We park at school and I look at him as he shakes his head. "It's nothing really. I'll tell you after the game. Now we better get to class before we are late because I already know if I'm late I'll hear it at home." I giggle at the last part. "Okay Luke, but we need to go say good morning to our friends before class so let's hurry." I tell him as I grab my bag and take off toward Michael's locker. I walk up to his locker to see Michael, Sam and Calum as well..."Hey guys good morning!" I smile at them all. Michael and Sam give me a look as if to say, "It's too early to be that happy." Then I see Calum give me a smile and it gives me hope that he'll actually talk to me today. "Morning everyone." Luke says beside me. "Morning...well I got to go." Calum mutters then quickly takes off in some direction. I look confused then start to feel a bit angry. "Why won't he talk to me?" I think to myself angrily then feel Luke touch my shoulder. "Let's head to class." He says. "Okay." I reply back to him then we walk to class in complete silence. I take a seat in Calculus and do the work Mrs. Hemmings assigns then decide to not let anything distract from my game today. Whatever Luke had to tell me and my anger towards Calum could wait until after the game. The rest of the day was a blur and the soccer teams got early dismissal so we could prepare for the first games of our seasons. The boys were up first. As the game started I sat by myself with the rest of the soccer girls and in those first few minutes Calum managed to get past three defenders to score a goal on the opposing team. "Yeah go Cal!" I yell and he gives me a smile that helps me think that things were going back to normal. The first half ends with our team up 3-0 with Calum having scored all three. Both teams head to the locker room and I give Calum a thumbs up then he gives me one back before leaving the field. I look at my phone to see that Michael was on his way with Sam and Luke. I smile because I was happy that Calum wasn't ignoring my existence any longer. The second half starts and I start to wonder when the others would show up. Calum takes the ball once again and scores another goal. "Yes good job!" I yell then see Luke, Michael, and Sam walking up the bleachers. "About time guys." I tease them. "Well some of us didn't have early dismissal like you did miss little athlete." Sam says with a bitter tone. "Oh um sorry." I tell her then take a seat next to Luke while she sits between Luke and Michael. "Note to self don't joke around with Sam." I think to myself. The games finishes with no more goals from Calum. "You should've seen him though, he was doing so well earlier! I don't know what happened. Maybe he got tired." I explain to them then hear my name being called to go warm-up. "Anyways I got to go! Wish me luck guys and tell Calum to stay for the game!" I say the last part carefully then hear Michael say, "Don't worry Ana I'll glue his butt to the bleachers." I laugh then get on the field. We begin warming up and I can't stop smiling. The field was one of my favorite places to be with some of my favorite people watching me. I wink at Luke and he winks at me back then before I know it Coach tells us who the starters are then we all get into our assigned positions. As soon as I hear the whistle I take off with the ball then make a few passes when needed and next thing I know the ball is at the back of the net with my foot being the last thing that touched it. I jump up and down in excitement and my teammates come up to congratulate me. I look towards the bench and see Selena, Michael, Luke, and Calum clapping for me. I was happy that Calum decided to stay and that Selena kept her promise to come to the game. Sam is there with her arms crossed, but I mean I knew sports weren't her thing anyway so I didn't care that much. The game passes by and my teammates and I end with a win to start our season. Coach gives us his talk then dismisses us to our friends and family. I see Selena, Michael, Luke, and Sam waiting on the bench but see Calum taking off like he was going to avoid me again, but I was tired of this so I dropped my soccer bag on the field then ran towards him to confront him "So what gives Calum? You're just going to take off like that? That is really rude. You have been avoiding me lately and don't act all innocent because your attitude has been consistent these past days." I say with a bit of a temper. "Ana bug off you don't want to know what is going on." Calum says and tries to dismiss me, but I wouldn't have it. "Calum yes I do want to know what is happening. Calum you are my best friend. You and Michael are like the brothers I've never had and have always wanted. You know what it means to have you two in my life like that!" I yell at him as I reach my breaking point. "See Ana! That is what I am talking about! I can't be who you want me to be. I can't be like a brother to you because I am pretty sure I am in love with you!" I stand there deadpanned with everyone looking at us. "What? No..." I say out loud then hear Michael say, "What the hell dude? We had an agreement that you wouldn't tell her!" I start thinking about that had happened the past few days with Luke...I had been hurting Calum this whole time...I start crying really hard then run off to my car to head home. I see my driveway empty. "Typical..." I think to myself then open my house and lay on the couch. I lay there for a few minutes and cry. "I can't date Luke...I'll be hurting Calum if I do...I can't do that to him..." I think but then get interrupted as I hear a knock at my door. I hope that it's not Luke or Calum because I am just confused, they would just make the situation worse. I open the door and see Michael then pull him into a hug. "Michael," I start to say and cry some more. "I know Ana. I know Ana. Let's go inside and talk about this." We sit down on the couch for awhile as Michael gets me to calm down. "I have been hurting him this whole time..." I say quietly and pull my knees to my chest. "I'm a horrible person. No wonder your girlfriend hates me...I can't keep doing this with Luke. I can't date him if he asks me too..." I continue then stare off into space. Michael pulls me into another hug. "Ana you are not a horrible person. You are one of the sweetest people I know. Sure you may be too happy in the morning for mine and Sam's liking but I still love you like a sister." I laugh a little at the last part. "See there is that laugh." Michael says as he pokes my cheek. "As for Calum don't worry about him. He'll be fine. I saw the way he was looking at Selena today. He is not as in love with you as he thinks. We'll take care of Calum. Date Luke, Ana he makes you happy and he treats you well plus he's a pretty cool dude. Don't let Calum take that away. It'll all workout. I promise." He tells me and kisses my forehead. "Thank you Michael. I needed to hear that. You are the best brother a girl could ask for." I tell him sincerely. "I know Ana." He teases me and I laugh at him.
