Chapter 16: Someone Else

It's been two weeks since I fought with Peter. In school, I've done everything in my power to avoid him. I would sometimes take the longer route to class because he was in the hallway. There were times he was persistent and kept following me, so I would go lock myself up in the girls' bathroom. The only time I would be in the same room as he is is when we have volleyball practice. I was the volleyball captain and he was the second-in-command.

Tonight was a Friday night. I decided to procrastinate and do my two thousand-word essay on perpetual motion tomorrow. I was catching up on my favorite series Gossip Girl on Netflix. I was snuggled up under my warm and soft comforter with a cream soda on my bedside table and a bowl of extra buttery popcorn.

I was in the middle of an intense scene when I heard something weird. I heard a tap on my window. It was like tiny pebbles were being thrown at it. I hesitated getting up from my comfortable position, but then decided to check out the window.
I got up and pushed aside the curtains. There was a note stuck on the window. It said:

Meet me at our place. 8:00 sharp! I'm bringing your favorite~chocolate dipped strawberries.
                                           -Peter

I mentally groaned. I was pissed. I really really don't want to see him. I'm not ready to talk yet.

I was sitting on the edge of my bed staring at my closet. I wasn't deciding an outfit, I was deciding if I would show up. I don't want to see his Alice-loving face. I don't want to talk to someone who's been defending you-know-who.

Chocolate dipped strawberries. That came to my mind. I loved those strawberries. It was like eating a part of heaven. My taste buds would be jumping up and down each time I take a bite.

After twenty minutes of staring and thinking, I decided to go. I took a really long bath since I had a lot of time; it was only 5:45.
Around 6:15, I stepped out of the shower and got dressed. I wore a grey sweatshirt with black pants and a pair of brown leather boots. I brought my olive green water repellent jacket and a scarf was wrapped around my neck.  I put on very little makeup and didn't do anything with my messy curled brown and amber highlighted hair.

I finished getting ready at around 7:00. It was still too early. I was bored trying to kill time. I thought of continuing the Gossip Girl episode I was watching, but then I knew if I did, I wouldn't be leaving the house anymore.

Ten minutes passed and I've decided to just go bike around the lake where we were meeting.

"Dad, I'm going to out!" I peeped at his room before I left.

"And where are you going?" He looked at me and put down the newspaper he was reading.

"I'm just going to bike around the lake."

"Really? Then, why are you so dressed up with all that scarf and boots. Are you meeting someone?"

"Dad, I'm not trying to impress anyone. It freezing cold outside and yes, I'm meeting up with Peter."

"Oh. Well, I'm glad you two are mending things."

I just smiled and got out of the house. I pedaled my bike and felt the cold breeze sweep over my face. The wind did mess my hair, but it was worth it. For some reason, I felt so good, so positive, so...free.

The lake where I'm meeting Peter was just outside the town. It was on the boarder between the two towns. It was very peaceful and wasn't inhabited by people. Animals though, we're hiding under trees and we're in the holes they made.

I got here and left my bike at our place. It was a huge rock near a cliff over looking the other town. It was an amazing view. I haven't been here since we were twelve and it hasn't changed a lot, but the view sure did. The other town had more houses and low rise buildings.  They had a new welcome sign.

"You're early." A voice said from behind.

"Well, you're late." I replied with a smug look.

"I'm glad you want to talk to me." Peter said with a humbling look.

"I came for the strawberries."

"Ah. I figured you can't resist that."

Peter was holding a woven basket. He brought out cucumber sandwiches and the strawberries.
"So..." He said.

"So..." I replied avoiding eye contact.

"You've been avoiding me, Zoe. Why?"

"Because."

"Because what?"

"You hurt me."

"Hurt you?!?!"

"Yeah!" Blood in my vains were starting to boil. "I was humiliated in front of a lot of people and all you could think of was me getting along with your ex-girlfriend so that you don't have to be in the middle."

"All I ever asked of you was to give Alice a chance. From the beginning, I've always sensed tension between you two. Now, I know why." He whispered the last few words.

"You're together aren't you?" I mumbled.

"Alice and I?"

"How'd you guess?" I asked with sarcasm in my tone. "Of course you and Alice! You've been telling me to give her a chance. You wouldn't want me to be that close to your ex unless she's your girlfriend again."

"Actually, she and I never broke up."

"What?!?!"

"Yeah, we fought and all, but we never officially broke up. After two weeks we decided to end our fight."

"Oh. I'm sorry I said all those things about her."

"Though, we broke up weeks ago. It was even before you admitted anything. She said that was the reason she was breaking up with me and she did all that to prove it to me."

"So, if it wasn't for me, you and Alice would still be together?"

"Yes, but I'm glad we broke up because my heart had always belong to someone else."

We stayed quiet after that. We were both lost at the breathtaking views from up here. I didn't even notice I was licking the tips of my fingers that were covered in chocolate.

Then, as if the world decided it was meant to be, we both turned our heads slowly facing each other. I stared at his wonderful sea green eyes. Looking at them,  you would feel a chill run down your spine. It was as if all the hair in my body were standing straight up and tingling. My stomach were doing back flips and I was trying hard not to shake. A small smile curled up on the edge of his face and he leaned forward. Slowly and gently, he kissed me.

His lips collided with mine. It wasn't harsh or as passionate as I imagined my first kiss with Peter. His lips were tender and light. He wasn't rushing. He was actually savoring it.

He pulled away and I immediately knew I looked flushed. I smiled then looked at him who was unsure if he did the right move.

"I'm your someone else?" I quietly asked.

"Yes. Yes, you are, Zoe Meyers."

And with that, he placed another kiss on my lips and I completely got lost in it.
