I was hugging my knees sitting near the corner. My tears never seemed to stop. I was clutching the letter tight. I just couldn't believe why my dad never showed this to me. I turned eighteen four months ago.
"Zoe! What happened?" Connor entered the room with worry I his eyes.
"I'm fine. It's just that I read this letter. It was from my mom." I whispered.
"Oh. I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I'm tired of hearing those words."
"I'm sor-"
I shot a look at him which made Connor smile. We were silent for a few minutes. There was no other sound except the constant tick tock of the clock.
He looked at me and said," do you still want to grab some food? I completely understand if you're not in the mood anymore."
My eyes lit up,"No. I-I'd love to go eat dinner."
With that, Connor smiled in a way I've never seen him smile before. He usually just has a small side smile, but now, his whole face smiled. The side of his eyes crinkled. His cheekbones were raised and you could see his teeth.
He stood and helped me get up. I gave him this black long sleeved shirt from the twins' room instead of Dad's.
I grabbed a pair of black leggings and a navy blue sweatshirt that was way to big for me. I put on my favorite black uggs.
I was wearing a white beanie and stepped outside. Connor was leaning on the wall opposite my room. He looked at me and put his hand over my shoulder. I tensed up and I bet he felt it.
"You nervous?" He smirked.
"What?!?! Nervous? Heck no!" I shouted.
"Okay. Calm down." With that, he grabbed my beanie and put it on his head. He also took off his shoulder from my arm and we started walking to the food truck.
The truck was called Cheesy Bacon. It had a menu with only four dishes: Pancake sandwich with cheese and bacon, a Quesadillla with bacon and cheese, and chicken wings with bacon and cheese sauce. For dessert, they had vanilla ice cream with cheese and bacon bits."So, what are you going to get?" Connor asked staring at the menu.
"Maybe a quesadillla and a root beer." I replied.
"I'll probably get a pancake sandwich and a beer." He said.
"Beer? Seriously?"
"Yeah. Why not?"
"You're only nineteen. That's illegal!"
"I was just joking! Sheesh, lady."
I just rolled my eyes and paid for the quesadellia and root beer.
We sat on the sidewalk and enjoyed our meal. We were talking about our plans on the varsity school fundraiser. Every year, each varsity has to raise funds for the school. The team that raises the most, gets three percent of the total earnings for the benefit of the varsity team.
"I'm planning to do a carwash." Connor said as he munched on his sandwhich.
"Really?" I asked.
"Yeah, but we have this rule that the team has to be shirtless while cleaning cars." He smiled.
"So that's how you're planning to earn money; by showing off your abs."
"You can say that. How about you guys?"
"I don't know yet. Peter's been busy with that Movie Under the Stars thing."
"I think you just don't want to tell me." He raised his eyebrow.
"Maybe." I giggled.
After another hour of bickering and laughing, we decided to walk home. Connor fixed the beanie he stole from me and put his hands in his pockets. The night was freezing cold. Good thing, I wore a sweatshirt and boots. My house wasn't really that far, so we got there in fifteen minutes. We stopped at the front door.
"Thank you." Connor said out of nowhere.
"For what?" I wondered.
"For making me have a good night since Pep broke up with me."
"That's the least I could do."
He just smiled and stared at me. Those blue eyes staring at me. He looked so happy. I've never seen him like this before. He leaned closer and was just five inches away from my face. I never expected this, but he kissed me. It was so passionate that it made me completely forget I was with Peter. I kissed him back with the same aggressiveness he had.
"Zoe?"
I pulled away to see Peter standing in the driveway.
"Peter. I can explain." I said.
"Yeah. Explain because I don't understand why you would do that." He said covering his mouth
"Peter, I-"
"Stop. Just stop." Then he started to walk away. I don't know why, but I didn't run after him. I just stood there.
"Zoe, I shouldn't have done that. I'm really so-" Connor apologized.
"Why?" I said with my voice low.
He didn't answer. He just looked at me.
I said,"Why? Why did you have to kiss me and ruin my relationship."
"I didn't mean to."
"Well, you did!" I screamed. "You ruined my relationship with Peter. You hurt Pep and-"
"Hurt Pep?!?! She's the one who broke up with me!"
"She only did that because she said you never fully loved her. There was always another..."
"Another what?"
"Girl. T-That's me right? I'm the other girl."
He just nodded.
"Great! Now you just wrecked my relationship with my boyfriend and best friend." I said with tears in my eyes.
"Zoe-"
"Why do you have to ruin my relationship just because yours did." I shouted.
"I never meant any of that!"
"Leave. I don't want you to talk or come near me anymore. Ever."
I saw no emotion in his face except his eyes. Hurt, disappointment, betrayal filled those blue eyes that once sparkled the brightest, but now is clouded with hate and resentment.Connor didn't say anything. He didn't argue or defend himself. He just...left.
