"Ballad," Mr Schuester spoke after writing the topic onto the choir room's whiteboard, "From Middle English balade." Their Glee Club teacher explained coming in front of his students, "Who knows what this word means?"
"It's a male duck," Bella only smiled at Brittany's answer, seeing Rachel having her hand held up, "Kurt," Mr Schuester pointed to the fashionable student, "A ballad is a love song."
Bella pats her brother's arm, "Sometimes, but they don't always express love. Ballads are stories set to music which is why they're the perfect storm of self-expression," Their teacher explained, "Stories and music are the way we express feelings that we can't get our any other way,"
Quinn glanced to where Bella Hummel sat with Grant Thomas' arm over the back of her chair, "Okay, now sectionals are in a few weeks. And there is a new rule this year. We have to perform...a ballad," Mr Schuester spoke pointing to the whiteboard.
"Looks like my weekly to Ohio Show Choir Committee finally paid off," Harper furrowed her eyebrows turning in her chair to look up at the sophomore, "Don't you have a sad life?" Bella sniffled her laughter behind her arm pretending to cough when Rachel turned her head to look at her friend.
Mr Schuester quirked an eyebrow at Rachel's response, "Oh, so here's our assignment for the week. I'm going to pair you off, and I want you to pick a ballad to sing to your partner." Mr Schuester went down to Artie's height, "Look them right in the eye, and find the emotion you want to express, and make them feel it."
"I pick Quinn," Finn blurted out with Bella now having a frown on her face as Grant rubbed Bella's arm where her flannel shirt stopped at seeing the girl's frown, "No, no, no, no,"
Mr Schuester shook his head, "Too easy." Harper looked to her best friend who met her eyes with a kind smile, "Your partners will be chosen by fate,"

Bella shared a kind smile with her friends, "Ooh yeah, I put all your names in this hat. Whoever you choose is your partner." Brittany leaned over to Santana, "I bet the duck's in the hat." She whispered to her best friend as Bella only smiled again at Brittany's answer, "But Matt's out sick today. He had to go to the hospital because they found a spider in his ear."
Bella and the rest of the New Directors all cringed and shivered at a spider being in their friend's ear with Malik sharing a look with Mike and Grant knowing how the spider got into the football player's ear, "Um, I guess I'll just have to put my name in the hat for now."
"Who's up first?" Noah Puckerman moved from beside Rachel going towards the black top hat and picking out a name, as the group drummed their hands onto their legs, "Mercedes."
Harper went next and added an extra sway to her hips in her skirt that she wore, "Artie," the wheelchair boy smiled at his fellow freshman as Harper leaned over and high fives Artie.
