Jaykit squeaked as Smokeflame began to groom her gray-blue fur.

"If you're going to go play with the others, you're going to be freshened up." Jaykit's foster mother protested sternly.

Jaykit gave up the fight and went limp, letting the queen groom her fur. There was no point in fighting.

"Why don't you just go to your own mother?" Wolfkit squeaked rudely, eyes narrowing. "You do know that's our mother, right?"

"Shush!" Owlfang scolded from behind Wolfkit. "You know that Jaykit's mother is with StarClan! That's no way to treat a littermate!"

Wolfkit scoffed. "She's not my littermate, and she never will be."

Jaykit felt a stab of sadness go right through her heart. First her denmates, Marshkit and Tigerkit, didn't like her, and now even her own littermates weren't fond of her.

"It's not my fault my mother's dead!" Jaykit squeaked angerly. Smokeflame shushed her and continued to groom the top of Jaykit's head.

"I'm waking up Blackkit so we can play." Wolfkit hissed. "Away from you." He mewed with an annoyed expression on his face.

Why can't I play? What's wrong with me? Jaykit thought to herself as Smokeflame set her down near her fluffy tail.

"Blackkit!" Wolfkit called to his littermate. The little black-furred tom lifted his head sleepily from where he slept beside Smokeflame.

"What is it? What's wrong?" Blackkit mewed with a yawn. "Are we apprenticed yet?"

"No, you mouse-brain!" Wolfkit scolded. "We're going out to play. Hey, Marshkit? Tigerkit? Want to come too?"

The two of Owlfang's kits nodded. "Yeah!" Marshkit squeaked. "We want to play!" Tigerkit mewled.

"That's fine with me." Owlfang agreed, looking over at Smokeflame and Jaykit. "Smokeflame?" She prompted.

"Oh, yes. That's fine. Under one condition." Smokeflame mewed sternly.

"And what's that?" Wolfkit challenged, his head tilting to the side. "What's the condition?"

"You have to play with Jaykit, too. She probably feels left alone right now, with all of you playing without her." Smokeflame meowed.

"Oh, that's fine!" Blackkit mewed. He was the nicer littermate. Never rude to Jaykit. "Jaykit, come on!"

"No!" Wolfkit squeaked. "I don't want to play with her!"

"You have no choice, Wolfkit. Either play with Jaykit, or don't play at all." Smokeflame hissed, giving Jaykit a sympathetic look.

Wolfkit huffed, but gave up. "Fineeeeee. I'll play with her."

"Alright. You can leave now. Go on, Jaykit." Smokeflame nudged the kit towards her denmates.

Jaykit squeaked and fell forwards, standing up and shaking her fur out. "So what are we gonna play?"

Wolfkit, Marshkit and Tigerkit all snorted and left the nursery without a word. But Blackkit stayed.

"We can play hide and seek, maybe?" Blackkit suggested. "If the other want to."

"That would be nice." Jaykit purred. "We can do that."

As Jaykit left the nursery, she turned and saw Smokeflame give her a smile. Maybe her denmates weren't all that bad.

As they approached the others, Wolfkit let out a huff. "I don't see why Smokeflame had to make us play with you."
