Jaykit sighed. Her foster mother was calling
for her. She scampered towards the sound of the queen's frantic mew.

"Jaykit! Jaykit!" Smokeflame called from the entrance of the ShadowClan nursery.

Jaykit ran faster, reaching the nursery. "I'm here!" She panted.

Wolfkit poked his head out from behind Smokeflame. Blackkit followed, smiling at Jaykit.

"What took you so long?" Smokeflame mewed worriedly. "You know tonight's the Gathering! We don't want you to get swept away with the warriors!"

"I know, I know!" Jaykit mewled in an attempt to stop Smokeflame's speech. "I was playing by the medicine den."

"Well don't." Wolfkit butted into the conversation, scowling at Jaykit. "Clearly Smokeflame was worried."

"Hey now, don't be rude." Smokeflame mewed to her kit crossly. "Jaykit is just as good as the rest of us."

"Yeah!" Blackkit squeaked. "Jaykit's just like us!"

Jaykit felt Wolfkit spark with anger as she padded into the crack between Smokeflame's tail and her foot.

"Let's go, Blackkit! Let's play!" Wolfkit said with fake enthusiasm. The two kits left the nursery with little squeaks and mews.

Jaykit felt Smokeflame's tounge rasp across the top of her head, and the kit squeaked.

"Stop that!" Smokeflame hissed playfully, continuing to lick Jaykit's head. "Your fur's ruffled!"

Mews sounded from outside. Jaykit saw Blackkit and Wolfkit hurry into the nursery, ears flat. "What's wrong?" Smokeflame asked, her eyes widening in worry.

"A cat!" Blackkit squeaked. "He smells weird!" He mewled, hiding behind his mother.

"Can I see?" Jaykit poked her head out of the nursery, only to be grabbed by the scruff by Smokeflame. "No. It might be dangerous."

"He's not!" Wolfkit butted in, looking outside. "Look, Redstar's talking to him!"

Even Smokeflame poked her head out of the nursery, letting go of Jaykit's scruff.

Jaykit took in the scene quickly, flanked by her foster brothers.

Tawnyeyes and Dawnberry were flanked at the stranger's sides, growling and hackles raised.

Redstar was talking to the stranger, who's scent wafted all the way to the nursery. The air smelled like grass and wind.

"He's a WindClan cat." Smokeflame murmured. "Their leader. Spotstar." She commented, eyes wide.

"Wow!" Wolfkit mewed. "A leader! A WindClan leader!"

Jaykit couldn't hear what the two leaders were meowing about, but she watched curiously.

"Shush, Wolfkit." Smokeflame scolded quietly, ears pricked. Jaykit guessed she was listening to the two leaders speaking.

After a long while of listening, Spotstar nodded submissively and turned around, escorted out by Sageleaf, Dawnberry and Tawnyeyes.

Redstar padded back to the large rock that jutted out of the hollow, climbing it with a calm expression. Jaykit wondered if he was going to call a Clan meeting.

"Is he gonna call for the Clan?" Blackkit spoke Jaykit's thoughts aloud.

"Maybe. Now shush." Smokeflame hissed to her kit, eyes focused on Redstar.

"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather beneath the Clanrock for a Clan meeting!" Redstar called. Every cat in the Clan was already poking their heads out of their dens from Spotstar's arrival.

Smokeflame hurried her kits forwards, and Jaykit squeaked with suprise when she felt Smokeflame pick her up by the scruff and her world tipped over.

"Is Redstar angry at WindClan?" Wolfkit mewed.

"I don't know, darling." Smokeflame whispered as they sat down and the queen set Jaykit in between her paws.

"Is WindClan giving us territory?"

"I don't know."

"Is WindClan attacking?" Wolfkit pestered his mother. Jaykit seriously wanted him to shut up.

"I don't know." Smokeflame hissed. "Shush, Wolfkit."

"As many of you know," Redstar began as the last few cats of the Clan gathered. Jaykit saw Marshkit and Tigerkit over by the fresh-kill pile, listening in beside their mother.

"WindClan's leader, Spotstar, has visited the camp." Redstar finished, glaring down at his Clan. Jaykit felt a shiver go down her spine as Redstar landed his gaze on her.

"He has asked for an alliance. RiverClan has been attacking, and ThunderClan has formed alliances with them." Redstar murmured, loud enough for everyone to hear.

"I say we don't form an alliance! ShadowClan will deal with it alone!" Newtspeckle, a ShadowClan warrior, called out angerly.

Jaykit watched as the Clan made their decision. "I think we should form this alliance. It may be useful in the future." Badgerheart mewed quietly.

Redstar signaled with his tail for silence, and the Clan looked up at him with wide eyes. Jaykit looked up and saw Smokeflame's amber eyes looking doubtful of what she thought Redstar would say next.

"ShadowClan will be forming an alliance with WindClan." The leader announced, his tail twitching. Jaykit guessed he was nervous his Clan wouldn't accept his decision.

ShadowClan cats murmured doubtfully among eachother, eyes slits and pelts bristling.

"This meeting is finished." Redstar called, beckoning to his deputy, Sageleaf, to follow him into his den.

The bright white she-cat nosed her way through the crowd, and Jaykit watched as her and Redstar dissapeared into the small den.

"I need to deal with something." Smokeflame murmured to the kits. "Go back to the nursery with Owlfang, and you can play with her kits."

Jaykit was lead away by Blackkit, staying silent as she looked back at her foster mother. Smokeflame was speaking in a hushed voice to Pinewhisker, Jaykit's father.

Blackkit picked up his pace and Jaykit struggled to keep up, running alongside her foster littermates until they all reached Owlfang at the nursery.

"Come on, kits!" Owlfang called. Jaykit bounded into the nursery, noticing Tigerkit and Marshkit were sleeping beside their mother.

Jaykit huddled close to her foster mother's nest, breathing in her scent as Blackkit and Wolfkit flanked her and lay down.

Jaykit closed her eyes slowly, falling asleep to the sound of Blackkit and Wolfkit's purring.
