Big Brothers are the Best

*May 17th; 2:45 a.m.*

Mathilda woke up with a start from a nightmare. She was scared and shaking, looking around the room.

Now that she was becoming a big girl, Armin and Eren took the sides off of her crib, making the surrounding bars into side rails.

She scooted herself out of her bed and ran over to the bed on the other side of the room; holding her blanket around her as protection from monsters.

"Jonah! Jojo, I'm scared!" She cried to him, shaking him back and forth. His eyes cracked open and he turned over, looking at the girl.

"Tilda? Why are you 'wake? Night time."

She sniffled and wiped her eyes.

"I'm s-scared! I had a b-ba-d dream!" She cried. Jonah sat up next to her.

"Oh, I didn't know. I'm sorry. Wanna lay down with me?"

She nodded and tried to stop her blubbering, but she couldn't help it.

"It's okay. What was your dream?" Jonah asked her, helping her onto his bed.

"I d-don't know! Just scary..." 

They stayed quiet and listened to the rain that thumped against the window.

"Are you awake still?"

"Yeah" The girl whined out.

"Need cuddles?" The blonde boy asked. She scooted over to him quickly and laid into the arms he held open for her.

"I protect you. Just go sleep." Jonah slurred as he yawned. He felt Mathilda nuzzle into his shirt and grip onto his blanket.

"Night Bubbas."

"Night Tilly"

And with that, Jonah got Mathilda back to sleep in record time.

Eren and Armin woke up early that morning, both getting ready for the day. It wasn't until Armin went to check on the kids that he noticed Mathilda wasn't in bed. He panicked at first, but then he saw a movement from Jonah's bed. He walked over and looked into the bed before smiling softly.

Jonah was spread out on his back, his blanket pulled to his chest. He had a little line of drool falling to his pillow. One arm was bent to rest on his stomach, and the other stretched out and was being used as Mathilda's pillow.  She laid on her stomach with her face squished against Jonah's forearm. Her arm was stretched just enough for her yo grab his shirt.

"Eren," He quietly called out "come here."

The brunette walked over, a little confused, before looking at the bed and smiling.

"When did they end up sleeping in the same bed last night?" Eren asked?

"No clue. I was wondering where Mathilda was at first, but then I saw a tuft of her hair move in Jonah's bed." Armin laughed in response.

They left the two alone and finished getting ready before going to grab their coffee. When they came back, the kids were still in the same spots, but Jonah had his eyes open.

"Good morning, bubbas. Did you protect sissy last night?" Armin cooed as he bent down next to the bed. The blonde boy nodded, keeping his arms around Mathilda.

"We're very proud of you, Jonah. You're such a good big brother."

He smiled and nodded.

"I love 'Tilda."

Eren and Armin both chuckled.

"We know you do. We love you, buddy." Eren commented from the side of the room.

"Love you too. You too, Papa." He smiled up at Armin, making him smile back down at him.

"I love you too, Jonah. Are you ready to wake up or will you sleep a little more?"

They watched him yawn and rub his eye.

"Sleep."

Armin covered him all the way with his blanket and rubbed his arm until he was asleep.

*1 hour later*

Mathilda sat up in a bed that wasn't hers. She looked around before noticing she was in Jonah's bed.

"Bubba?" She asked. She lifted his blanket and saw him asleep , curled up under said blanket.

"Bubba, up!" She called out as she shook him. His eyes cracked open and he looked at her.

"'Tilda?"

"Morning!"

He smiled at her.

"Good Morning."

"Where Papa and Daddy?"

Jonah sat up and looked around, seeing that neither parent figure was in the room.

"They were here before. Maybe they're cleaning or working?" He guessed.

"Okay. Let's get ready an' eat!" She cheered, getting up to look through her dresser for clothes. She hummed as she found a shirt and pants to wear.

Johan slowly got up and followed her to the dresser. He opened his drawer and picked out a random shirt and shorts.

After they both got dressed, they went downstairs to look for Eren and Armin.

"Papaa! Daddyyy!" Mathilda called as she skipped through the halls. Jonah looked around and noticed that many of the soldiers were gone, and he was confused.

"Where is everyone?" He asked. Mathilda looked at him before looking around.

"Maybe they went fightin'." She shrugged. Jonah was confused.

"Fightin' what?"

"The scary giants. They fight them all the time!"

Jonah's eyes widened and shined with curiosity.

"Will they tell me 'bout it?"

"Maybe. Just gotta ask!"

He nodded, saving the information for later. They got to the dining hall where they finally found two soldiers, sitting at one of the tables and talking. Mathilda smiled and ran over to the two.

"Petra! Oluo!" She shouted as she ran to them. Petra opened her arms and caught Mathilda, bringing her close to her.

"Hello, Mathilda. Your Papa and Daddy are doing an important meeting, so we're here to watch you guys!" The older girl explained. Mathilda whined.

"Meeting? Those takes forever! And no good stories! Papa and Daddy get tired too!"

Petra laughed and Oluo chuckled as he helped the sluggish boy sit up at the table.

"But look at the bright side, Matty; They won't come home with owwies. Your Papa will read to you and maybe your Daddy will do something with you. Like puzzles!" She suggested. She saw Jonah smile as Mathilda looked like she was thinking about it.

"I like reading." He said softly. The two smiled down at him and Mathilda crawled over to hug him.

"Well, I love what Bubba loves! But I love reading first!" She said matter-of-factly, making the three laugh.
