Pain spiked in y/n's leg and she cried out, landing on her side on top of the maze wall, her legs dangling over the edge. She pulled them back.

Y/n whimpered and curled up on the ground, holding her leg and shaking like a leaf. She heard someone grunt behind her. Minho. The griever.

Y/n's head whipped up and she tried to prop herself up. It was dark, but the red eyes of the monster lit up the expanse separating y/n and Minho.

He was standing at the edge, holding his knife. He wasn't making a move to jump. To escape the griever just a few leaps away.

"Minho!" Y/n desperately called for him. Her voice was riddled with pain.

He didn't acknowledge the shout. He was bouncing in his feet, staring the griever down. The monster pulled its feet over the edge and armed it's weapons with a roar.

Then it ran towards him. One, two steps. Three more. Y/n struggled to push herself up but pain vibrated thruogh her body. Her mind felt foggy. Her breathing was loud in her ears as if directed inward and echoing inside her head.

She desperately tried to at least get a view of her boyfriend's last moments. The sliver of his form far away was barely large enough to discern life or death.

Then the griever made one last leap. Its mouth wide open and stinger glinting with reflecting redness. Minho stepped to the side at the last moment and slashed his knife along the monster's torso. He stumbled and barely avoided falling of the edge.

Y/n sighed wirh relief and let her head fall against the ground once again. The griever was unmoving on the maze floor after it fell with a sickening slap.

Y/n breathed thruogh the pain, her eyes closed tight. It was slowly fading, and she was eager to get back to the glade and tell of the possible escape route.

"Y/n are you alright?" Minho shouted with a panicked voice.

Y/n raised her head groggily and saw him leaning over the edge with concerned eyes. She weakly raised her hand, still lightheaded. Minho stepped back and readied to jump, ignoring her slight wave.

"No- its fine-" Y/n gasped and sat up, her elbows buckling.

"No, no, no stay in place y/n im coming to get you" Minho quickly called to her.

Y/n barely had the energy to protest so she simply leaned against her elbows. Her throat felt constricted and her eyes watered. That had been too close. She had almost lost Minho.

Minho leaped over the expanse and rushed over to y/n. He grabbed her under her armpits and lifted her up to a standing position. He leaned down, trying to get a view of her face.

Y/n held onto Minho's shoulders tightly, and the moment of lightheadedness passed. He pulled her hair out of her face and held her head.

"Im ok" y/n nodded, then felt another wave of a need to cry assault her.

"I almost lost you" y/n's voice broke and she hugged Minho, who patted her back.

"Im here, y/n" he whispered to her, still supporting her in their standing position.

She sniffed and pulled away from Minho. His eyes were glossy as well. They laughed a bit at the past few moments, feeling ridiculous.

Then they climbed down the wall. It was painful and difficult. But y/n didn't give up. It gave her strength thinking about the years they had spent trying to escape. What it had cost her. The lives lost. She coudn't help but hope that the Griever hole they had found was a way to leave.

And when she finally landed harshly on the ground, arms burning and leg aching... She rose. She caught her breath, took Minho's hand. And together, they rushed to the Glade with escape on their minds. The next time they would run these corridors would be the last.
