Izuku sighed, wiping away some sweat from his forehead with a frown.
"Oh, come on, Izu! We're almost done!" Mina cheered, pointing towards the end of the road, which seemed miles away to the greenette. He had already been shoveling around for the past seven hours, and he knew he wasn't going to stop for eight more. His neck, back, thighs and arms. Every muscle in his body ached, but he had to keep going. He knew that this day of hard work would give him a boost on his weekly pay, and he knew once this road was going to be finished, he'd be able to return home to his partner and a cold shower.
"You're younger than me, you have more energy." Izuku cackled, glancing at the twenty-year-old woman. Mina rolled her eyes, seeing there was only a few years separating them. The greenette looked down, shoveling away a good amount of rubble as he stepped forward. Tomorrow was the army parade, the street had to get done as soon as possible. Which is why the entire construction crew was there to help, today.
"Aizawa, what time do you estimate we'll get this done?" Izuku asked, turning around to face his boss, who approached them with water bottles. Aizawa winced, looking ahead to the rest of the street and the amount of work there was left.
"I'd say we'll be working 'til one or two in the morning." He spoke, watching as both Midoriya and Ashido picked water bottles. Izuku frowned, looking back ahead of him as their boss kept going to distribute the drinks. His mind wandered off to Katsuki, who had gone out today with some friends to celebrate his 27th birthday. He still felt bad for canceling his plans with the blonde on such short notice, after promising him they'd be able to spend some time together.
A smile made its way on pink lips as he stuffed his hand in his pocket, pulling out his phone. He dusted off his right hand as he began typing, pressing on Bakugou's contact number as he held the device to his ear, pressing it there with the help of his shoulder while he continued his work. He listened to the rings, until it finally stopped, hearing his boyfriend's voice at the other end.
"Hey, love. How's work?" The blonde immediately asked. Izuku smiled, brows furrowing.
"Could be better. I was calling to let you know I won't be home until tomorrow morning, probably. There's still so much work to do." The greenette spoke. He heard the blonde sigh on the other end, able to tell Bakugou was unhappy with Izuku after how much he had been pushing him aside.
"I thought you'd at least be home to see me tonight. You do realize I haven't seen you at all, today? I fuckin' woke up in an empty bed on my birthday. A goodbye kiss would have been nice." Katsuki grumbled on the other end, causing Izuku's heart to tug.
"I know, I'm sorry. I didn't want to wake you up at four in the morning." He huffed, his smile dropping at his partner's unhappy tone. "How's your day going, having fun?" He asked, trying to change the subject as he continued to throw some rubble around in front of his feet.
"I just left Kiri's house, goin' home for the night." The blonde answered.
"You shouldn't be on the phone while driving." Izuku chuckled, earning a heavy silence from the other end. He kept a forced smile as he spoke up again. "You had fun today though, right?"
"I would have had more fun with you." The blonde spoke up again, a hint of annoyance in his voice. Midoriya's brows furrowed as anger rose in him.
"Well, sorry, I have a fucking job and bills that need to get paid." He snapped, hearing his partner reply immediately.
"I have a job too, and mine pays a hell of a lot more than yours! I offered to put on some extra time while you look for a better job, but no, mister workaholic is too damn obsessed with shoveling tar." Bakugou argued. "You could have at least made an effort to spend some time with me today."
"I tried, Katsuki! And it didn't work out, fuck's sake!" The greenette's voice raised in pitch as Bakugou responded.
"Oh, fuck, I'm not doing this right now - Not over the phone." The blonde finished, hanging up before Izuku could say anything back. A sigh escaped his mouth as he stuffed his phone back in his pocket, glancing over to Ashido's shocked expression. A silence roamed as both continued to work, Mina trying her best to stay out of her friend's business.
1:32AM, Sunday, April 21st. That's what appeared on Midoriya's phone screen as he opened it before getting into his car.
Izuku glanced down to his phone, seeing two missed calls from his lover. He closed the car door, turning on the engine before picking up his device again to return the blonde's call. After spending several hours shoveling dirt, he figured Bakugou would have calmed down and would be ready to talk a bit more, even at this hour, or over the phone.
The phone rang as Izuku set it aside, putting it on speaker as he drove out of his parking space. Within a few rings, it finally stopped and Izuku spoke.
"Did I wake you?" He asked, hearing his partner shift on the other end. He made his way down a certain street, nearing the highway as his boyfriend's voice was heard from the device.
"No, I was reading something online. Are you on your way home?" The blonde questioned, and Izuku tiredly nodded. He winced, being blinded by a pair of headlights as he continued his trip on the highway.
"Yeah, I should be home in about 10 or 15 minutes. We can spend some time together, then. You have a shift tomorrow afternoon, maybe we stay up late and sleep in tomorrow morning." Izuku suggested, eyelids beginning to get heavy from how tired he was. He glanced over to the phone, set on the passenger seat.
"Yeah, sounds good. I'll see you soon." Bakugou replied. Midoriya smiled as his boyfriend hung up, his phone screen going dark. Emerald eyes shifted back to the road in front of him, his smile fading as he sighed. He blinked, struggling to keep his eyes opened as he leaned back in his seat. He had spent the entire day working his ass off, and he could finally go home to rest in Katsuki's strong arms. Finally.
A tired smile made its way onto plump pink lips, head lowering as emerald eyes disappeared behind eyelids. He was so tired. His body was weak, and his limbs refused to cooperate with the signals his mind was sending them. He was shutting down, and that's okay.
A quick nap couldn't hurt, right?
But, not now. He had to get home, first.
Izuku rested his head back on the headrest, struggling to keep his eyes open to the highway in front of him. His foot became heavy on the pedal it, watching as his vehicle picked up speed. Though normal people would be in panic, right now, all his mind could think about was how much he needed rest. How much he wanted to sleep. He didn't even flinch as he felt the tires beneath the car slip off the road.
All he could do, was fall into a deep sleep.
