A knock on the door followed by Soobins voice threw Yeonjun out of his thoughts.
»Can I come in?«
Yeonjun sat up and answered: »Yeah sure...« That's when he noticed that he had been crying. Fuck wait no. But Soobin had already opened the door.
»Hey«, Yeonjun said while frantically wiping away his tears in hopes of being fast enough.
»Are you okay?« Soobin closed the door and sat next to him.
»No but it's not like I'm not used to it.«
The taller didn't know what to answer so Yeonjun started venting a little bit: »I mean it's not like I want this war to continue but this is just such a stupid situation. If they don't want this war they shouldn't have instigated it in the first place.« He began picking at his pillow as his voice turned into a whisper. »And I also just don't want to die.«
An awful silence followed.
After a while, Soobin patted Yeonjun on the head which resulted in the latter starting to laugh all of a sudden. »Really Soobin, that's how you comfort people?«
»Well, it kinda worked, no?« The younger smiled too.
Yeonjun scoffed: »I guess so.«
»Ah!« Soobin seemed like he just remembered something. »Right, I was gonna tell you something. Taehyun recently found the descendant and apparently Destya did as well... They got to him last night it seems.«
Yeonjun nodded. Taehyun had already told him about half of that. And Destya probably knew about the prophecy as well – it was heavily rumoured that they stole the scroll – so this was to be expected. »Yep... of course they would.«
»But... that shouldn't be.«
»What, why?«
»Well... He told us about him roughly a week ago and your parents wanted to make sure Destya wouldn't find him. So I put a spell on a bracelet that would totally suppress his magic and make it undetectable... Taehyun was supposed to give it to him as a gift or something.« Soobin avoided eye contact. »And he told us that he did.«
Yeonjun thought about it for a while. »What if he just didn't wear the bracelet at all times? That doesn't seem far-fetched at all.«
»I know it wasn't a perfect plan okay! But the thing is... your parents are definitely stuck on Taehyun being responsible for it.«
»Mhm, they never liked him«, Yeonjun responded absently. He would be lying if he said his best friend hadn't been acting suspicious most recently. Hell, that was the only reason he was back in his room now. »Have you asked him about it?«
»Noone has been able to contact him... But it hasn't been that long so we'll see.« Soobin stood up and walked towards the door. »Anyway, I should go back to my studies now.«
»Wait!« Yeonjun said as the taller put his hand on the doorknob. »Do you know someone called Kai?«
»Kai? I don't think so.«
»Mhm okay.« A few minutes after Soobin left, Yeonjun stood up and made his way to the library.
The library was probably the place Yeonjun had spent the most time in – aside from his own room. As soon as he was old enough to understand what was expected of him, he had begun going there and would read every book that seemed like it could contain clues to stopping his fate. He was 22 now and was pretty sure that he had read every History book that his family owned.
There was an entire subsection dedicated to previous prophecies. They were described from start to finish, documenting every attempt to prevent them in great detail. If Yeonjun didn't know any better, it would just feel like a bunch of stories with bad endings to him. But he knew better than anyone else how real they were.
He quickly skipped through those books but as expected there wasn't anything new to find. Maybe there really was no hope for him.
Taehyun had told him to look for a solution elsewhere so he started looking through completely unrelated shelves.
»I don't think that's what Tae meant...«, he whispered as he skimmed through a romance novel. After he closed the book he raised his eyebrow at the cover. »Although I think I've seen him read some of these.« He put it back and took a broader look at the shelf in its entirety.
One book in particular stood out to him: 'Royal Prophecies and the Psychology of Love'. He quickly took it and opened the first page which was an Author's Note.
Dear Reader
I am sure you're aware of everything that has happened over the past decades and how its affecting our society. With the world and especially our neigboring kingdom Destya in such a chaotic state, it can be difficult to take one's time to sit down and read a book. Thus, I am most grateful that you decided to give mine a chance.
This study will be specifically about the prophecies from the previous two centuries [1400-1600] and will deal with the various causes of romantic conflicts concerning the involved parties as well as the effects such public display of tragedy have on how we perceive love and romance in our everyday life.
»Wait– until 1600?« Yeonjun gasped and immediately looked around to make sure he was alone. Luckily he was.
He had read about prophecies from 1400 but everything about the 1500s belonged to the Lost Century. All records about their realm from that time were missing. Yeonjun skipped towards the latter half of the book to make sure those parts hadn't been ripped out.
1506 – The Prophecy of Princess Eunhee
They were still there. He couldn't believe he was actually holding information in his hands that most people assumed to be gone for good. Carefully he tried tucking the book into his hoodie's pocket which turned out to be way too small. Yeonjun wasn't sure why he was still wearing that – he had only worn it to not look out of place in the human world – and now it wasn't even useful.
Then he rushed back to his bedroom and locked the door. Sitting down, he proceeded to read the few prophecies that he didn't know about yet.
...
...
...
»Great«, he mumbled as he reached the end of it. First of all, he didn't understand any of the author's analyses – too many big words. Second of all, none of these prophecies had been prevented either. Third of all, he was extremely tired.
He wasn't expecting to find anything of value when he turned the last page but there was something... or rather nothing. It seemed like a few pages were indeed ripped out, he just didn't notice that before. Yeonjun wondered what could've been written there. The previous segment he had read seemed to be the last one. Would it be another author's note? Or a summary? Or something else?
After a long yawn he decided that there was no way to find out anyway. He laid the book on his nightstand and turned off the light.
As he went up to his bed again he noticed a faint glow flowing from inside the book. When he opened it he saw that it came from the very end. There appeared to be something written on the end paper that glowed in the dark. It was impossible to decipher as it had been crossed out and scribbled over to oblivion though.
Another yawn caused Yeonjun to close it again and finally go to sleep. He made the decision to find Taehyun the next day, even if that meant leaving the palace again.
A/N I originally planned to finish two chapters today but welp I couldn't and it's already 1AM where I live and I'm actually tired for once
