During the drive, the car was very quiet. I was thinking about everything, especially about all the things I had done. Everything was going through my head. At one point, Diego broke the silence. "Is everything okay Miss Díaz?" "Yeah, just thinking." "Fernando is only doing this for your own good you know Sof." "How can this be good for me?" "Your father knows what he's doing, even if it doesn't look like it." "I hope you're right." We arrived at your destination in a few minutes. Here it is... My downfall begins here. I started to take my suitcases out of the trunk, but Diego called me. He gave me an envelope, to which I asked: "What is that?" "You'll need it to start." At that moment, I realized what was in the envelope. "Oh, no thanks, I have some savings, I will survive this month," I answered. "It's okay, just don't tell your dad, otherwise we're both done for. You'll probably be hungry tonight." "Thank you Diego, I'll get back to you as soon as this is all over", I hugged him tightly, I don't know how he could breathe. I said goodbye to him, but before he left, he took something out of the car. "My pillow," I shouted. "I know you can't sleep without it, Soph." "You're the best, really." And so Diego drove off, and I stayed in front of my apartment.
The front door looked desperate, but you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, right?
And I was totally wrong.
There was no elevator in the building, so I had to walk up the old creaky stairs. The entrance to the apartment was like in a horror movie, and the interior is even worse.
I entered the room, which was completely cramped. Apart from the bed, there was only a wardrobe in it. Only a building could be seen through the window. I already missed my old perfect room. I sat on the bed and thought. After a few minutes I started to unpack. I realized that the closet was too small, so I just pushed the suitcases into it. I pasted some pictures on the walls so that they don't look completely empty and pale.
I realized that I have a balcony in my apartment, so I decided to go outside and look at it.
The balcony was completely cramped and there was only a table and an armchair on it. There were some wires above, I realized that people put their clothes there. I realized this by seeing it on another building.
I decided to take a shower and ran to the bathroom and was in shock.
The bathroom had only a bathtub, a toilet and a sink. There was a mirror above the sink, which was half lit. In my bathroom, I had a bathtub four times bigger than this one and a huge mirror. I got into the bathtub, horrified. Normally, I would have bathed for several hours, but I bathed for a few minutes when the water became icy. My heart stopped for a moment. Looks like there isn't even hot water here.
I didn't know what to do, so I went to the living room, which was in the same room as the kitchen. The kitchen was not that bad, just very narrow. Still, the view was beautiful. I was already thinking about how I would drink coffee there.
I browsed the shelves and found food that I can cook. Of course, I've never cooked, but it seems like this is a wonderful time to learn. My dad must have left that for me. I made a coffee and looked at the latest internet news.
I received a message, it was my dad. I was hoping that he was telling me that he had changed his mind and was taking me out of this terrible place. But unfortunately I was wrong. He only told me what time my work starts in the morning. I asked him how to I will get there, but he told me to manage. The only thing that came to my mind were buses, with which people who don't have a car go to work, I guess. I searched for buses that drive by my apartment. I have to get up around 8 in the morning to catch the bus. I haven't gotten up that early since elementary school.
*A few hours later, in the evening*
Diego was right, I was starving. I didn't want to cook at that moment, in fact I didn't want to set the apartment on fire the first night. I took my savings and headed to town.
I left the apartment and looked at the building.
I leaned against the building. A tear slid down my face. Maybe it was all true. Maybe people are right. Maybe I'm a spoiled brat.
I came across a food stand, otherwise I wouldn't have passed by, but times change I guess. I ordered some of the cheapest food. It was a sandwich. It was incredibly cheap for the person I was, but also incredibly expensive for the person I am now. I took one bite and my taste buds exploded. I have never tried something so delicious in my life. I can't believe that I missed everything.
I was tired so I immediately fell asleep as soon as I got to the apartment.
