We had sat on the porch steps for a good hour or so before Mom came back to the house. Of course, being the Mother she is, she strictly told me how I "shouldn't be out on the porch and should be lying down getting some rest"

"Mom, I only came out to get some fresh air. I'm not going to go and work."

After having realized that I was truely only out here to get some air she sighed and smiled. Gently caressing my bruised cheek she allowed us to stay on the porch.

"But no further then this. Got it? I don't want you running off like a fool thinking your all healed just because you took medicine."

"Yes Mom. I pormise, we won't move from these steps any further from the house."

She nodded, having been able to get me to agree to her terms.

"What are you doing back here anyway?"

"Oh, I forgot to grab some paperwork I had been doing yesterday. For the new cat."

"How is he anyway? he seemed skiddish when he woke from his sedation yesterday."

"He seems fine today. Quite the rowdy one actually. Well behaved I'd have to say though."

"Well behaved? Right off the bat? That's knew."

Out off al our cats there had been none that would calm down enough right away and so well behaved that we were able to work with it so quickly. Even Cody took a while to open up to me. I glimpsed over at him. He was listening to our conversation with his eyes closed. Elbow resting on his knee, palm upturned with his chin resting in it. He looked....amazing. 'Amazing? Am I really thinking that?'

"Anyway, gotta grab the paperwork. Then I'll come back and get lunch together for everyone. I bought some of those finger sandwhiches this morning."

"You left the house so early this morning to go shopping?"

"Its the only time I actually can go shopping. I'm busy throughout the rest of the day I don't have time too."

"I can help you with your work you know? You don't have to do all the paperwork and house cleaning by yourself."

She waved her hand as to dismiss his words. "It helps to distract me from things anyway. Thats why I don't mind doing it."

"As long as your not stressing out about it. Seriously, I don't need you going crazy from too much work."

"Too much work?" She walked by us on the steps and stopped in the doorway. "If any one has too much work its you." She dissapeared in the house.

"I have too much work?" I asked myself looking over at Cody. I didn't expect an answer but I was surprised to find him looking back at me, giving me one.

"I think so. Now that your old man is gone you've taken over ownership of of this place, right? I've never really seen how a business works but you always deal with the staff, the customers, your Mom and the other cats. And even after all that you make sure to spend time with me. You do realize I can go a day without you coming to see me."

He must have seen how shocked I looked by his statement and smiled, continuing his speech.

"If you need to take care of other things I'll understand. You don't have to worry about me all the time. I am a cougar. Scratch that. I'm a shapeshifter. I can take care of myself."

I couldn't help but chuckle quietly to myself and looked up at the sky, leaning back on my arms behind my back.

"Yeah, I guess I don't have to. But I like coming to visit you. Like Mom said about her work distracting her. Lazing around with you distracts me from stress and all that."
