A Less Exciting Surprise

Several months have passed. It’s now the beginning of December. I’ve gained a few pounds and my cheeks don’t have the thin, unhealthy look to them. She has been writing to me. I don’t want to tell her I’m in Gryffindor, so I’ve been saying I’m in Slytherin. I don’t want to go home for Christmas and have her find out the truth. I don’t want anyone else to find out the truth either, so I say nothing about my life outside of Hogwarts to anyone. Only Shawn knows the truth, but he has promised he’d never tell anyone.

Today, I walk into the great hall and sit down and the table, which is mostly empty. I’m so busy reaching for food, that I bump someone’s arm.

“Sorry.” I say. Then I gasp. It’s the same girl I bumped into at Flourish and Blotts!

Apparently she recognizes me too, because she says, “We’ve meet before.”

“Uh-huh.” I don’t know what else to say.

“How are you?” then without waiting for an answer, “My name’s Hermione Granger. What’s yours?”

“Um, Tobias Lunderson.”

“Nice to meet you. Oh, Hello Harry. Hi Ron!”

The skinny kid with glasses and the red haired kid sit down across from us. Of course! Harry Potter! How could I have not noticed it before?! The other must be Ron Weasley. After all this time sharing a dorm with them, how could I have not noticed?

Then, a funny feeling creeps over me and there’s a tingling in the back of my neck close to my head.

“Excuse me. I’ll be right back.” I say. I get up and leave the great hall, quickly walking down the hall. Pretty soon, I am bending over the sink in the empty bathroom. The tingling in my neck is worse. It’s now a jabbing, searing pain. I rub at it with my hand, but that has no effect.

I say out loud to myself, “What’s going on? This pain? It almost feels like…..it feels like…”

“The Cruciatus Curse?”

I whip around at the voice. She is standing there, wand out. How did she get here?

I’m glad you came in here instead of running to a teacher.” She says, “I want to talk with you privately.”

I stare back at her, not meeting her eyes.

“What do you want to talk about?”

“About why you lied to me about being in Slytherin. I say you sitting at the Gryffindor table just before you came in here, and there are red and gold markings on your robes.”

“I…”

She puts up her hand to stop me.

“I don’t know why you’d lie to me, but I do know that I did not raise you to be a liar.”

She raises her wand and points it at me.

“No…” I start to say but it’s too late.

She yells, “Crucio!”

And I’m on the floor writhing and twisting and screaming. And that’s all I can remember before I blacked out.
