My arms claw against his neck and I feel myself losing my pride.

He pulls away and I pant an embarrassing amount of air in and out. He holds me out while he looks at my embarrassingly red face. He smiles a condescending smile.

I may have lost my dignity but not my pride. I push his arm away and wipe my lips with back of my hand.

"Elise," His arm comes back to my waist. He leans down next to my ear and just as he's about to say something the elevator door opens.

I walk out, leaving Alessandro.

"We have business today Elise." His familiar hand rests on the small of my back.

"What kind of business?" I ask.

"Are you familiar with knives?" He hand rubs annoyingly soft circle on my back. It's makes my legs weak and I hate it.

My eyebrow furrow and I look up to see a smirk on his face. "knives..?"

He doesn't answer, so I say, "I mean cooking wise, but I'm no master-"

"No I'm talking about in combat."

"Why why the fuck would I know how to use a combat knife?" My eyes practically pop out my head.

"Well you're going to learn." He sighs.

"Huh? Why do I need-"

"I'm going to have you intimidate a man tonight. Very well known man and I need you to show no mercy." He leans down as he talks.

"Alessandro, you can't expect me to automatically learn-"

"I need you to Elise. There are no if or buts about it. You show weakness, they'll get you to get to me. You understand?"

"Who are they?" I pause.

"Elise don't act so naive, you're farther is in the business. Don't ask dumb questions."

"Alessandro, my father never told me anything about his business. I really have no idea what you're talking about." My heart races.

Knives? People? What the hell was Alessandro talking about.

Alessandro walks ahead of me and I start to think he's ignoring me when I catch up to him.

"Alessandro. What are you talking about?" I pull on his arm.

"You really have no idea." He looks between my eyes.

I look up to avoid rolling my eyes. "No. I've said it about twelve times. I don't. Know."

"Your dad works in the drug cartel. He owns a whole empire. He's pretty fucking dumb, but he has good workers." He says nonchalantly.

My mind twists and reels. I thought my dad owned a business but a fucking drug empire? Was this a lie or the truth.

"Drugs? Is that what you do too?" I step back.

"That and other things." He shrugs.

"Alessandro that's... illegal. You're joking right?" My eyes go wide.

He laughs and pulls a hair behind my ear. "I'm aware, and no. I am not lying." He laughs again.

"Why are you laughing!" I pull away. "You're insane. You know that? I'm not taking part in your illegal activities."

"You have to. With a dad like that I'm surprised you weren't kidnapped earlier. Fuck, he's incompetent." He runs a hand over his face.

"Look, I'd appreciate if you stop calling my dad names." I cross my arms.

"He gave you to me! Did you know that? I fucking made a deal and he offered you! So if you want go along thinking he's some angel when he's been feeding you lies your whole life, go ahead. But I'm the one who told you the honest truth. Can't say the same about your father." He levels down.

I feel this huge pit in my stomach and the biggest urge to punch his nose.

"So you're going to come with me tonight for business. I need you alive for the year." He leaves me feeling so empty.

Alessandro sends a man named Levi to the room to take me to the training room. It's in the basement, which is dark and full of all kinds of equipment. There's a gym and a fighting arena. We go down to a room where he opens the door and a dummy and a few blades rest on a table.

"Good afternoon, Miss Mercier. My name is Levi." He holds his hand out to shake.

I shake it and give a quaint smile. I still feel betrayed by my father and have this growing aching feeling. Tonight I'll cry in the shower. I will not let Alessandro see any weaknesses in me. He deserved nothing but a punch in the face, nuts and stomach.

"So here we have a training knife, we'll start with that. But then we have-"

He goes on and on about them and their purpose. I feel like falling asleep half way through his explanations. He teaches me a few moves and how to place them on scarily easy access point.

~

"Ok. So remember, keep control and force." He nods. "Jugular."

I hold the cool metal knife in my palm and nod. I switch it around and pull the blade to the neck. Jugular vein.

"Good. Next, Carotid."

I adjust slightly and swiftly and place it right over the vein.

"Nice. Heart."

I switch my grip to wrap around the cool metal and press against the right chest plate.

"Perfect." He have done this whole ordeal for about twelve minutes and after hearing all this anatomical terms, I should be able to graduate from medical school.

"We'll learn attack moves next week." He holds his hand out for the knife. I flip and give it to him.

"Nice work." I hear his stupid voice.

I turn and Alessandro leans against the door frame watching me.

I drop my knife on the table and say my farewells to my trainer.

"Nice work today!" He says before I leave.

I walk out, hitting Alessandro's shoulder and pretending he does not exist.
