We cruise between huge buildings and busy streets. We must be in the heart of the city. Lights of all colors line the street and reflect off our face.

I must've slept on the way here because all I remember was a heavenly sandwich and comfy seat.

"I need you on your best behavior." Alessandro states, right as I am waking up.

I pull down the passenger mirror and fix my sleepy eyes and hair. "I'm not sure what you mean." I tap my finger on my lips.

"Elise I'm serious. Don't you ever think for one second that you can speak to anyone here like you did to Pauly. Luckily Pauly is a friend of my dad's, so he wasn't super upset, but you didn't need to talk back the way you did."

"Alessandro. Why would I let someone talk shit about my family to my face? Should I just sit there and take it next time?" I pull my hands to my chest. My face is turns red and I feel like jumping out the car.

We stop at a red light, and I turn towards my window and shut him out with my body.

"Because here you will be killed if you speak out." His hand wraps around my jaw and lightly turns my head to his.

His eyes bounce back and forth between mine and I nod.

"I'll try."

"Good," He pets my hair. I whip my head out from his grasp and look out my window.

We pull up in-front of a regal looking building with a huge statue in the front. It's gold and screams luxurious. The framing around the building is gold and gaudy.

Alessandro stops the car as a man who looks to be around our age waits for Alessandro to roll down the window.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Di Carlo." He practically bows.

Alessandro nods and places the keys into his hands.

"Ma'am," A man in a tux looks down at me and holds his hand out. Somehow in the midst of watching Alessandro and the valet guy this man managed to open my door.

I shake my head and put on a smile. "Sorry," I put my hand in his and make my way out.

"Remember what I told you. I don't want to explain why you no longer exist to my parents." Alessandro places a hand around my waist and guides us inside.

The doors open and just like his family meeting thing, I feel like royalty. They all greet Alessandro with a small head bow and a guide brings us over to the elevator. We enter an elevator and I have to refrain from looking down because the bottom is clear glass.

"Afraid of heights?" Alessandro snickers.

I take a deep breath before responding. "No,"

The doors open and the small ding announces our appearance. It seems like a huge business party. Everyone mingles around and talks to one another. Great. It's not like I don't know anyone here and have no point in talking to anyone. Thank you so much Alessandro for inviting me to something I am completely pointless at.

"Alessandro!" A cheery voice squeals.

We turn and see Pauly's daughter. What great luck!

"Oh, you brought the sna- Mercier. How nice of you." She wraps an arm around his.

"It's Elise. I never got your name. What is it?" I ask. I am cordial. I am nice. I am respectful. I say these affirmations as if they'll ever come true. Newsflash they won't.

"Right. It's Lauren." She nods and looks up at Alessandro as I leave my hand out.

Alessandro nods towards my hand she looks at it before shaking my hand. Bitch.
