The University

Ellies POV

"I heard about this guy who got hit in the head with a can of soda. His lucky it was a soft drink." Anastasia jokes while joining me and Joel next to the horses.

"Hey, my pun book!" I say.

"I assumed it was yours, I found it laying in the grass you almost forgot it." Anastasia says while handing the book back to me.

"Oh my god, I'm so sorry," I say to the book bringing it into my chest before shoving it back into my bag which gets a little laugh from Anastasia.

She seems better today, I guess her finally breaking down last night did her some good, not having to bottle them all up anymore. I'm glad she's feeling better.

"If we leave now we should be able to make it to the university before sundown," Joel says as he unties the horses from a tree.

Anastasia has been talking more today, joining in mine and Joels' conversations but we've been riding along for a while now and frankly, I'm getting bored. "Hey, can you teach me how to ride this horse properly?" I ask Joel leaning over to the side a bit so I can see a bit of his face. 

"You don't know how to ride a horse?" I hear Anastasia say.

"Well, there weren't any horses in the QZ." I defend myself.

"I know, I was there remember?" Anastasia says. To be honest, I almost forgot she was in the QZ, she acts a lot different from how she was back then. Maybe it's because I've gotten to know her more here, or maybe she has just changed. 

"When did you leave the QZ?" I ask, I wasn't really thinking before I said it because if I was then maybe I would have realised that something might of happened and she doesn't want to talk about it, but it's too late now.

"Umm, only a week or so after you did. I met a woman called Marlene, she said she could take me somewhere safe, that being Jackson, and my mother would so be there. It was only supposed to be a couple of weeks before my mum was meant to be in Jackson but she never showed up, then Maria heard on the radio that she might have been with the fireflies and that's when I joined you guys." Anastasia explains.

 It takes me by surprise when she starts to talk about her mother but she seems okay talking about it. I hope she is.

The university is giant, bigger than I ever imagined. I didn't expect to see monkeys either which was so cool. We get off our horses and tie them up on a nearby tree. Cautiously we open the door to the university, Joel stepping in first. 

"There were definitely doctors here," I state as we look around. We head upstairs where we find a map. 

"Did you hear that?" Anastasia whispers to me. I give her a confused look before hearing the sound of people talking for myself.

"Lets go, out the back. run." Joel says while jogging to the door opening it for the both of us. We make it outside crouching down behind some bushes before making a run for it to our horses. Before we can get on a man comes and grabs Anastasia from behind. She seems to be fighting him off but Joel runs to help her but not making it in time before I see a man with a bat approach behind him.

"Joel, look out!"I yell, holding up my gun at both the attacking men. Both of them seem to be fighting these guys off pretty well but I stand there feeling helpless, I don't know what to do. Anastasia knocks the guy that was fighting her out clean and then she comes running up to me.

"Ellie, are you okay?" She asks me but I'm too focused on what's going on with Joel to answer her. Joel gets behind the man and snaps his neck. He turns to me and my eyes drift down to his stomach seeing the end of a broken bat stabbing inside of him. 

"No no no, don't take it... out." Anastasia says trying to prevent the chances of him bleeding out but I guess Joel wasn't thinking because she was too late. Joel pulls the bat out of his stomach.

"Come on, lets go!" I say seeing more men coming from the distance. We get up on our horses and ride off.

"Joel, no!" I say as he falls off the horse. I get off with some struggle and Anastasia comes up next to me and checks his wound.

"Oh shit." I hear her say.

"Come on, I can't fucking do this without you." I say
