Since their father wanted to take the normal way because he wanted to check the sudden appearance of the corpses, it took them a few days to arrive at Yiling. Because Wen Ning had taken care of those corpses beforehand, it did save them some time but still it didn't soothe their impatience to find their mother.
So when they reached Burial Mounds after leaving Lil' apple at the foot of the mountain, they discovered that a long section of the wall had been pushed down again and they knew right away that it couldn't mean anything good or nice. And as if to prove his haunches aren't all wrong, they found nothing good.
The protective spells and beast statues were all taken down by someone and it looked really alarming. However when they saw Wen Ning stood beside the stone beast, head lowered and unmoving. Hua Shizui asked, "Ning shushu? What are you looking at?"
Wen Ning kneeled on the ground with both of his knees. His fingers dug deeply into the dirt, grabbing a handful of black dirt, and clenched it within his palm, "... Sister."
Hua Xuanyu and Lan WangJi didn't know what to say and Hua Shizui looked somewhat guilty. He walked over and patted his shoulder hard as he said, "It seems like a-niang never had a time to tell you everything. When this is over, remind me to take you somewhere to meet someone."
Even though he looked somewhat confused by that, Wen Ning nodded in agreement as they continued upward. However the deeper they went in, the deeper pain Wen Ning seemed to feel seeing the destroyed village he once used to live with his family.
Hua Shizui, "Don't look anymore."
Wen Ning, "... I knew that it'd be like this a long time ago. I just wanted to see if there was anything left..."
Before his voice faded off, a shadow suddenly wobbled up within one of the broken down houses.
A corpse.
Soon a few dozen joined it from all around and they had to pave their way up the mountain across them. That much of corpses, they all assumed that those must be the lost corpses from all around the area.
Killing that much was hard, exhausting and disgusting. But they managed somehow. Yet, what greeted them inside the Demon-Slaughtering Cave-the legendary den of YiLing Laozu left them all shocked for a good while.
Why were there at least a hundred young disciples or direct disciples from clans tied up there? They had no idea. They didn't even try to understand until they all met face to face with the family members of those youngsters at the entrance of the cave.
There were a group of cultivators from different sects, wearing uniforms of different colors. The group grew larger and larger. In estimation, there were almost two thousand, and of the boys rushed outside the cave, shouting, "Dad!" "Mom!" "Brother!" They were embraced into the crowd.
Lan QiRen stood before the crowd. He seemed much older. Strands of white even began to grow at his temples. He called, "WangJi."
Lan WangJi's answered in a low voice, "Uncle."
Then Lan Qiren's line of sight moved towards Shizui and Xuanyu as he called, "A-Yuan, A-Yu... Where is your mother?"
But they didn't answer- they didn't know how to answer.
Lan QiRen's face darkened at that. With Lan WangJi's overly cold aura, it wasn't too hard for him to realize that something is terribly wrong. Something had happened to his precious nephew-in-law and his nephew and grandnephews are hiding it from him.
A woman in white robes stood forward, her eyes filled with tears, "HanGuang-Jun, just what is wrong with you? You... You are not you anymore. In the past, you clearly could not even stand the YiLing Patriarch. Just what technique did Wei WuXian use to bewitch you for you to stand on the side opposite to us?"
