As I went past the faculty room, I unexpectedly encountered Horikita leaning in the hallway with her arms crossed. Chabashira-sensei was also there, carrying a clipboard.

"You're late, Ayanokouji," Chabashira-sensei spoke up.

"For what? I don't recall being called."

"I told you two earlier that we needed to talk."

I turned to Horikita, hoping to see any response from her but to no avail.

"What is it about?"

"Let's head to the guidance office."

Chabashira-sensei turned without hesitation, expecting that we'll follow her accordingly. Horikita fixed her posture and walked behind not uttering a single word.

What's up with these people? I thought.

Having no choice but to listen to the authority of my teacher, I followed them obediently into the guidance room.

After a minute, we arrived. Chabashira-sensei opened the door for us once again.

"Get in."

For such a beautifully mature teacher, she's pretty demanding. Not to mention forceful. Horikita and I didn't bother to say anything and just listened to Chabashira-sensei's instructions.

Horikita took a seat near the corner of the room. As a person that appreciates symmetry, I took a seat at another corner.

Chabashira-sensei scanned the room briefly and showed a somewhat confused expression regarding our seating arrangement. She disregarded the matter soon enough though.

"Listen. I heard the Student Council President was sent to the infirmary yesterday by a student named Ayanokouji Kiyotaka."

"Word travels fast it seems," I joked.

"I was informed when you left your name and contact number. Now, what happened? The two of you even had a meeting with Horikita Manabu just now."

It seems like Chabashira-sensei is misunderstanding the situation. Although it's true that the Prez was sent to the infirmary, it all boils down to a sibling quarrel, that's all.

She turned to the person at the other corner, "Horikita, what is this about?"

"It's a private matter," Horikita said without flinching. "I'm sure you would get a report from the Student Council President himself if we did anything that would violate the school rules. That's what you're worried about, right?"

"Worried?" Chabashira-sensei scoffed. "You misunderstand, Horikita. I've known the current Student Council President since he was a first-year. I'm sure both of you are well aware of how capable that man is. The fact that he was sent to the infirmary is alarming. Not to mention that a student of my class is involved."

I see. So she just wants to know who this mystery person is that was able to defeat the great Horikita Manabu so she can take advantage of the situation. Chabashira-sensei doesn't show it, but she's hiding a complex or two.

"What do you want from us, then?" Horikita asked.

"I want to know if the cause was you or Ayanokouji."

"Did the nurses forget to tell you that he tripped and fell?" I interjected.

"Stop acting like a fool."

"You're the one acting anything here, Sensei," Horikita shot back. "Even if we are involved in whatever fantasy you've created, what of it?"

"If you remain blind to your assets, you'll never reach Class A, Horikita."

Horikita scoffed, "Don't worry, Chabashira-sensei. I will reach Class A. You don't have to tell me that. As for being blind, it's hilarious that you think that way when you're the only person in this room that word applies to."

"What?" Chabashira-sensei's eyes narrowed as if she took offense to what Horikita said.

"It's clear as day what your motives are for calling this nonsensical meeting alone. You thought you could use us to get what you want. You're blinded by greed. That's why I'm reassuring you that you have nothing to worry about."

"Do you really think you can reach Class A with that attitude?"

"Just sit back and relax, Chabashira-sensei. It will all be clear to you soon."

Chabashira-sensei laughed in response, "I see. Whatever you're cooking, make sure it doesn't burn the house. This meeting is over; you can go now."

I feel like I'm just an NPC walking behind the main character. Horikita doesn't even need looking out for at this point.

The three of us left the guidance office shortly.

"I'll see you two in class," Chabashira-sensei said before leaving.

It seems like she's heading back to the faculty room.

Horikita immediately started walking back to class.

Since we were alone, I decided to call to her.

"Horikita."

"What do you want?" she replied without slowing down.

Spark.

"I'll send you a copy of the old midterm problems in your email. The president sent it to me just now."

"I see. Do so. Thanks."

This version of Horikita is even colder. I'd say her sassiness increased threefold. It kinda stings that she wouldn't even bother looking at me when giving gratitude.

"Medea Solon," I called to her.

As I said that, Horikita stopped dead in her tracks. She quickly turned to me with menacing daggers in her eyes.

"You dare call me that in public?"

"I just wanted to get your attention."

"You have it. Now, what do you want?"

"Whatever you're thinking of, I don't think it would be enough to reach Class A."

"I do not want to hear that from you, Ayanokouji."

Although she's made tremendous progress in the past day, her recklessness might come to bite her back. If Horikita falls, Class D is doomed forever.

"I don't think I've done anything bad."

"You have not done anything decent either. What is the reason you are always around, even? I thought you wanted to keep a low profile?"

"I am keeping a low profile. However, I guess you can say that it became a habit of mine to help out with your plans."

"I see. Then you do not have to force yourself to live a high school life that's out of your comfort zone anymore. I am aware of how capable you are, Ayanokouji. However, I do not need your helping hand."

"I think this matter is beyond your wishes alone. It's for the sake of the class."

Horikita scoffed and turned back around, "Since when did you start caring for the class?"

That was the last thing I heard before she walked away.

In the end, my voice couldn't reach Horikita's heart. At the rate she's going, the higher classes will definitely face an absurd amount of challenges and obstacles. But, I'm curious. If the other classes just maintain decent grades and good behaviour, there's no possible way for Class D to reach Class C, let alone Class A.

In that case, the S-System is infinitely flawed. If the lower classes have no chance of catching up, what's the point of assigning students based on their merit? I'm sure my exact thoughts were already discussed by the school staff. That said, what is going to be the game changer? What kind of opportunities will be given to the desperate Class D to crawl their way to the top?

Either way, I shouldn't care. I just like thinking about it. However, if given the chance, I'd like to see what that woman is truly capable of.

Spark.
