Chapter 1: Shadows of Reality
The school bell rang, its shrill sound echoing through the empty corridors as students hurried to their next class. But for YN, the sound was a mere background noise to the turmoil that brewed inside her. She lingered by her locker, eyes fixed on the dull, worn-out books inside, trying to steel herself for another day of torment.
She could feel their eyes on her sharp, judgmental, and cruel. The whispers were always there, a constant buzz that followed her wherever she went.
“Freak.”
“Loser.”
The words cut deeper than she ever let on. Her hands trembled slightly as she tried to gather her books, but before she could close the locker, it slammed shut with a force that made her jump. The laughter that followed was like nails on a chalkboard.
“Who let you in here, YN? Aren’t you supposed to be hiding under a rock somewhere?”
She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. The group of girls behind her were the usual culprits, mean-spirited and relentless in their cruelty. YN kept her head down, biting back the retort that burned on the tip of her tongue. Silence had always been her shield, though it was a fragile one.
Their taunts grew louder, more cutting, until one of them pushed her. YN stumbled, her books scattering across the floor. A kick sent them flying down the hallway as laughter erupted around her. She knelt to pick them up, each movement a desperate attempt to hide her tears.
But the day had only just begun.
At Home
Home was no sanctuary. It never had been. The walls that should have provided comfort instead echoed with arguments and disdain. Her parents’ voices were a constant storm, the air thick with tension. YN had learned long ago that her presence only made things worse.
She quietly made her way to her room, the one place where she could momentarily escape the world outside. But even here, the weight of her loneliness was suffocating. She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the small bottle of sleeping pills she had hidden in her drawer.
They were supposed to be a last resort, a way to quiet the noise in her head, to find a moment of peace. She hadn’t intended to use them today, but the day had drained every ounce of strength she had left. With a deep breath, YN unscrewed the cap and swallowed two pills.
As she lay down, she closed her eyes, hoping for nothing more than a few hours of oblivion.
In the Dream
The darkness of sleep welcomed her, but it was not the void she had expected. Instead, she found herself standing in a vast, misty landscape, the air cool and still. There was no sign of the tormentors who haunted her waking hours, no echoes of her parents’ harsh words.
For the first time in what felt like forever, YN felt…safe.
A figure emerged from the mist, tall and imposing, yet with an aura of calm that soothed her frayed nerves. As he stepped closer, the details of his face became clear sharp features softened by a gentle expression, eyes that held a depth she couldn’t fathom.
“You’re safe here,” the figure spoke, his voice a low, comforting murmur.
“Who…who are you?” YN asked, her voice barely a whisper.“I am Hoseok,” he replied, his gaze never leaving hers. “You’ve been seeking refuge in dreams, but I’m more than a figment of your imagination.”
The revelation was strange, yet in this dreamlike state, it felt natural. Hoseok reached out, and without hesitation, YN took his hand. His touch was warm, and for the first time in a long while, she felt a sense of belonging.
“Stay with me,” she found herself saying, her voice laced with a desperation she didn’t fully understand. “Don’t leave me.”
“I won’t,” Hoseok assured her, his voice a promise. “Whenever you need me, I’ll be here.”
Back to Reality
YN woke up with a start, the remnants of the dream lingering in her mind. Her room was the same, the darkness still heavy, but something had changed. For the first time, the thought of facing another day didn’t feel so unbearable.
She reached for the bottle again, the need to return to that dream, to Hoseok, overpowering. For now, the line between dreams and reality had blurred, and YN wasn’t sure she wanted it to be any other way.
As she drifted back to sleep, her thoughts were only of him, the god who promised to protect her in a world where no one else would.
