Chapter 11: The Edge of Despair
The Harsh Reality
YN’s return to consciousness was anything but gentle. The moment she opened her eyes, the pain surged back, both from the beatings and the deep emotional scars. She lay still in bed, barely able to move, her mind replaying the horrific events of the previous day. The bruises on her body were nothing compared to the bruises on her spirit.
The day dragged on with her locked away in her room, her parents oblivious to the full extent of her suffering. She knew that returning to school would mean more torment, more whispers, and more of the unbearable weight of existence. YN felt trapped, with no escape in sight.
An Escape into Dreams
Desperation gripped her heart as the day turned to night. YN’s only solace was in her dreams, where Hoseok waited, offering her protection and love that she couldn’t find in the real world. Her hands trembled as she reached for the bottle of sleeping pills, knowing she was about to cross a line that couldn’t be uncrossed.
But the need to see Hoseok, to feel safe even for a little while, overwhelmed her. She swallowed the pills, more than she had before, hoping to stay longer in the dream world, where reality couldn’t hurt her.
A Dreadful Calm
In the dream, YN found herself in the familiar, serene landscape. The place where she could be with Hoseok, away from the torment of her waking life. But this time, something felt different there was a heaviness in the air, a sense of foreboding.
Hoseok was there, waiting for her under the same tree where they always met. His expression was grave as he looked at her, sensing the darkness that clung to her heart. He knew what she had done, what she was trying to escape from.
Without a word, YN rushed into his arms, seeking the comfort and safety she craved. Hoseok held her close, but this time, there was a sadness in his embrace, a deep sorrow that YN couldn’t quite understand.
“You’ve taken too much, YN,” Hoseok whispered, his voice laced with a mix of love and regret. “I can’t keep you here for long.”
The Boundary Between Life and Death
YN looked up at him, confusion and fear swirling in her eyes. “What do you mean? I just want to stay with you, Hoseok. I can’t face them anymore.”
Hoseok sighed, brushing a gentle hand through her hair. “I know, YN. But you’ve crossed a dangerous line. The boundary between your world and mine is fragile, and you’ve pushed yourself too far.”
A cold shiver ran down YN’s spine as she realised what he was saying. “Am I... dying?”
Hoseok’s silence was answer enough. He tightened his hold on her, his heart aching at the thought of losing her. “Not yet. But you’re close. Too close.”
Tears welled up in YN’s eyes, her despair threatening to consume her. “I don’t care anymore, Hoseok. I just want to stay here with you. Forever.”
A Desperate Plea
Hoseok’s heart broke at her words. He had watched over countless souls, guiding them through death, but with YN, it was different. She had touched something deep within him, something he hadn’t known was possible. He wanted to protect her, to keep her safe, but he knew the dangers of letting her stay.
“YN, I can’t keep you here forever,” Hoseok said softly, his voice trembling with emotion. “You have a life to live, no matter how hard it is. If you stay here, if you cross that line, there’s no going back.”
YN clung to him, her tears soaking into his shirt. “I don’t want to go back. Please, Hoseok. Let me stay.”
Hoseok closed his eyes, feeling the weight of the decision before him. He loved her, more than he had ever thought possible for a god of death. But he also knew that to let her die now, before her time, would be a tragedy. “I’ll stay with you, YN. I’ll be here every time you dream. But promise me you’ll fight to live, at least a little longer.”
A Temporary Goodbye
The dream began to fade, the colours of the landscape dimming as YN’s consciousness was pulled back to the waking world. She tightened her grip on Hoseok, not wanting to let go, but he gently pried her fingers away, his expression one of deep sorrow.
“Until next time, YN,” Hoseok whispered, his voice barely audible as the dream dissolved around them.
YN awoke in her bed, the bitter taste of reality flooding her senses. Her heart ached with the loss of Hoseok’s warmth, but his words echoed in her mind, giving her a fragile thread of hope to hold onto.
For now, she would continue to survive, knowing that in her dreams, Hoseok would be waiting.
