Chapter 2: A Desperate Escape
The following morning was like any other grey and cold, with a sense of dread hanging in the air. YN’s eyes opened slowly, her body weighed down by the lingering exhaustion from the day before. But there was something different, a small flicker of hope nestled deep within her. It was the dream, or rather, the memory of Hoseok that she clung to, like a lifeline.
As she prepared for school, YN found herself in a trance, her thoughts drifting back to the way Hoseok had held her hand, how his presence had made her feel safe in a way that nothing else ever had. It was that feeling that gave her the strength to leave her room, to face another day in a world that seemed to hold nothing but pain.
At School
The day unfolded predictably. The whispers followed her through the halls, the stares like daggers piercing her already fragile defences. She walked with her head down, trying to make herself invisible, but it was no use. The tormentors were always there, always ready to pounce.
By lunchtime, YN’s resolve was crumbling. She sat alone at the edge of the cafeteria, her tray untouched as the noise around her grew louder, more suffocating. Every laugh, every jeer, felt like it was directed at her, and she couldn’t escape it.
A familiar group of girls approached, their eyes glinting with malice.
“Well, well, look who’s sitting all alone again,” one of them sneered. “No friends to save you, YN?”
The others snickered, and YN’s stomach churned with anxiety. She tried to ignore them, focusing on the untouched food in front of her, but they weren’t having it.
“Hey, we’re talking to you,” another girl snapped, knocking the tray off the table. The clatter of dishes hitting the floor drew the attention of everyone in the cafeteria, and YN felt the heat of a thousand eyes on her.
She stood abruptly, the need to escape overpowering. Without a word, she bolted from the cafeteria, the sound of their laughter following her down the hall. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she ran, not stopping until she reached the solitude of the school’s rooftop.
On the Rooftop
The cold wind whipped through YN’s hair as she leaned against the railing, her heart pounding in her chest. Tears stung her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She had cried enough that she was tired of being weak.
As the wind howled around her, YN found herself thinking of Hoseok again. The dream had felt so real, more real than anything else in her life. It had been an escape, a refuge from the cruel reality that awaited her at every turn.
She reached into her bag and pulled out the bottle of sleeping pills. She stared at it, the temptation growing stronger with each passing second. If two pills could bring her to Hoseok, maybe more could keep her with him longer, give her a respite from the endless torment of her waking life.
She hesitated, her grip tightening around the bottle. The rational part of her mind screamed at her to stop, to put the pills away, but the rest of her, the part that was tired, broken, and desperate, urged her to take them.
Finally, she twisted the cap off and poured several pills into her palm. With a deep breath, she swallowed them, the bitterness lingering on her tongue as she closed her eyes and waited.
In the DreamworldWhen YN, opened her eyes again, she was back in the misty landscape, the air cool and still. Relief washed over her as she took in her surroundings. She was here again, in the place where pain couldn’t reach her, where Hoseok awaited her.
And there he was, standing just a few feet away, his expression unreadable as he watched her approach. She ran to him without hesitation, throwing herself into his arms. Hoseok caught her easily, his strong arms wrapping around her, providing the comfort she so desperately sought.
“You’re back,” he said softly, his voice a soothing balm to her frayed nerves.
“I couldn’t stay away,” YN replied, her voice trembling. “It’s the only place where I feel safe, where I feel…loved.”
Hoseok held her a little tighter, his warmth seeping into her cold bones. “You should be careful,” he warned gently. “Taking too much of those pills could be dangerous.”
“I don’t care,” YN whispered, burying her face in his chest. “I just want to stay here with you. Please don’t make me go back.”
Hoseok sighed, his fingers threading through her hair in a calming gesture. “I can’t keep you here forever, YN. This is just a dream, a temporary escape. But you can’t run from reality forever.”
“I don’t want to go back,” YN insisted, her voice breaking. “There’s nothing for me there. Please, Hoseok, let me stay with you.”
His silence was deafening, but he didn’t let go. YN clung to him, desperate to hold onto the one thing in her life that made sense, that gave her comfort. But she could feel it the pull of reality, dragging her back to the world she so desperately wanted to leave behind.
“Remember,” Hoseok murmured as her vision began to blur, the dreamscape dissolving around her. “I’ll always be here, waiting for you. But you must be careful, YN. There are consequences to crossing the line between dreams and reality.”
Before YN could respond, the dream shattered, and she was pulled back into the harsh light of the waking world.
Back to Reality
She woke up with a jolt, her heart racing as the cold, unfeeling walls of her room came into focus. The warmth of Hoseok’s embrace was gone, replaced by the suffocating loneliness that always greeted her. The bottle of sleeping pills lay on the floor beside her bed, its contents nearly depleted.
Panic set in as she realised how close she had come to something irreversible. Hoseok’s words echoed in her mind that there were consequences to crossing the line. But despite the fear gnawing at her, the need to see him again was overwhelming.
She stared at the ceiling, tears slipping down her cheeks as she whispered into the empty room, “I’ll come back to you, Hoseok. I promise.”
For now, the line between dreams and reality had blurred even further, and YN was willing to risk everything to stay with the one who gave her the love and protection she so desperately craved.
