Chapter 21: The Boundaries Between Worlds
A Growing Connection
As the days pass, YN finds herself increasingly drawn to the dream world where Hoseok resides. Every night, she eagerly anticipates her time with him, where she feels the most understood and cared for. Their bond deepens, and YN begins to confide in Hoseok more than ever, sharing her fears, dreams, and hopes for the future.
Questions of Reality
One evening, while sitting by the stream in the dream world, YN turns to Hoseok with a question that has been on her mind for some time.
“Hoseok,” she begins hesitantly, “is this really just a dream? Sometimes, it feels so real, like it’s more than just my imagination.”
Hoseok gazes at her thoughtfully, his expression unreadable. “What do you think, YN? Do you believe this is more than a dream?”
YN bites her lip, considering his question. “I don’t know… but it feels like you’re real, like you’re really here with me. And the things you say they’ve helped me in ways I never thought possible.”
The Truth Revealed
Hoseok smiles gently. “YN, what if I told you that the boundaries between dreams and reality aren’t as clear-cut as they seem? That sometimes, what we experience in our dreams can be just as real as the waking world?”
YN looks at him, her heart pounding with anticipation. “Are you saying that you’re real? That you’re not just a part of my imagination?”
Hoseok’s gaze softens, and he reaches out to take her hand in his. “Yes, YN. I’m real. I’ve been with you all along, guiding you, protecting you. But I exist in a different realm, one that most people only glimpse in their dreams.”
The God of Death
The revelation leaves YN stunned, but it also answers many of the questions she’s had about Hoseok and the dream world. She feels a mix of awe and fear as she begins to grasp the full extent of what he’s telling her.
“Then… who are you, really?” YN asks, her voice trembling slightly.
Hoseok’s expression turns serious as he meets her gaze. “I’m Hoseok, the god of death. My role is to guide souls to the afterlife, to help them find peace. But when I saw your suffering, I couldn’t just stand by and watch. I wanted to help you, to give you the strength to face your challenges.”
YN’s breath catches in her throat. “The god of death…? But why me? Why did you choose to help me?”
A Special Connection
Hoseok’s eyes soften with affection as he explains. “You have a special light within you, YN, a light that drew me to you. Despite all the pain and darkness in your life, you’ve never lost your kindness or your hope. I saw that, and I wanted to protect it.”
YN feels tears welling up in her eyes. “But I’m just a normal girl. Why would someone like you care about me?”
Hoseok squeezes her hand gently. “You’re far from ordinary, YN. Your spirit is strong and resilient, and that’s what makes you special. You’ve faced so much, yet you continue to fight. That’s why I care about you.”
A New Understanding
The truth about Hoseok’s identity changes everything for YN. She realises that the connection she feels with him is deeper than she ever imagined, and it fills her with both wonder and fear. The idea that the god of death has taken an interest in her life is overwhelming, but it also brings her a sense of comfort, knowing that she’s not alone.
“Hoseok,” YN says softly, her voice full of emotion, “thank you. Thank you for being here for me, for caring about me. I don’t know what I would have done without you.”
Hoseok smiles warmly, his gaze full of warmth. “You don’t need to thank me, YN. I’m here because I want to be, because I believe in you. And I’ll continue to be by your side, for as long as you need me.”
Facing the Unknown
With this new understanding, YN begins to see her life in a different light. The knowledge that Hoseok is the god of death and that he’s chosen to help her gives her a sense of purpose and strength. She’s no longer just fighting for herself—she’s fighting for the light within her that Hoseok saw, the light that makes her unique.
But with this revelation comes a new challenge. YN knows that her time with Hoseok is not infinite, that eventually, she will have to face the ultimate truth about life and death. The thought scares her, but it also motivates her to make the most of the time she has left, both in the waking world and in the dream world with Hoseok.
