Chapter 24: The Breaking Point

A Harsh Return to Reality

After the emotionally charged conversation with Hoseok, YN finds herself waking up to the harsh reality she desperately wanted to avoid. The comforting presence of Hoseok fades away, leaving her alone in her cold, barren room. The lingering warmth of his embrace feels like a distant memory, replaced by the chilling emptiness that surrounds her.

As the days go by, the bullying and abuse YN endures at school and home only intensifies. Her classmates’ cruelty becomes more vicious, their taunts cutting deeper, and the physical violence more severe. The bruises on her body multiply, a constant reminder of the torment she faces daily. At home, the emotional abuse from her family leaves her feeling even more isolated and worthless. The walls of her reality close in on her, suffocating her, as she struggles to find the strength to continue.

Violence Escalates

One day, the bullying takes a particularly violent turn. During a lunch break, a group of classmates corners YN in a secluded area behind the school. The leader of the group, a girl who has always been particularly cruel, shoves YN against a wall, her eyes burning with malice.

“Why don’t you just disappear?” the girl sneers, her voice dripping with venom. “No one wants you here. You’re just a pathetic waste of space.”

The other students join in, their laughter echoing in YN’s ears as they hurl insults and push her around. The physical assault escalates as they kick and punch her, their blows landing with brutal force. YN tries to defend herself, but she’s outnumbered and overwhelmed. The pain is excruciating, but what hurts even more is the complete lack of empathy from those around her. It’s as if they’ve forgotten she’s a human being, deserving of kindness and compassion.

In that moment, something inside YN snaps. The world around her blurs, the pain and fear giving way to a cold, numb detachment. She no longer feels the blows raining down on her, no longer hears the cruel words being thrown at her. All she can think about is Hoseok, the only person who has ever made her feel safe and loved.

A Desperate Plea

Later that night, after returning home battered and bruised, YN locks herself in her room. She can’t bear to face her family, knowing that they won’t offer any comfort or support. With trembling hands, she takes out the bottle of sleeping pills she’s hidden away. The thought of escaping into the dream world, of being with Hoseok again, is too tempting to resist.

“I can’t do this anymore,” YN whispers to herself, tears streaming down her face. “I can’t live like this.”

She takes a handful of pills, her mind consumed by the desire to escape, to be free from the pain that has become her constant companion. As the darkness begins to close in, she silently prays that Hoseok will be there waiting for her, ready to take her away from this nightmare.

A Shocking Revelation

But as she slips into unconsciousness, YN is met with a different kind of darkness, a darkness that is cold, unwelcoming, and devoid of the warmth she has come to associate with Hoseok. She finds herself standing in a void, surrounded by shadows that seem to whisper her name.

“Hoseok?” YN calls out, her voice trembling with fear. “Where are you?”

The shadows swirl around her, their whispers growing louder, more insistent. They speak of despair, of hopelessness, of a life that was never meant to be. YN feels a cold hand grip her heart, the realisation that she is alone in this darkness hitting her like a punch to the gut.

Just as the shadows begin to close in on her, a familiar presence emerges from the void. Hoseok appears before her, his face etched with a deep sorrow that YN has never seen before. He looks different, darker, more imposing, as if the weight of his true identity has fully taken hold.

“Hoseok,” YN breathes, relief flooding through her. “I knew you’d come.”But instead of comforting her, Hoseok steps back, his expression conflicted. “YN, what have you done?” he asks, his voice laced with anguish.“I couldn’t take it anymore,” YN admits, her voice barely above a whisper. “I just wanted to be with you, to escape from all the pain.”

Hoseok shakes his head, his eyes filled with a mix of anger and sadness. “You’ve taken too many pills, YN. You’re on the brink of death. I warned you about the dangers of coming here too often, but you didn’t listen.”

The Consequences of Desperation

YN’s heart sinks as she realises the gravity of her actions. She thought that by coming to this world, she could escape her suffering, but instead, she’s put herself in even greater danger. The shadows that surround them grow more menacing, their whispers turning into a cacophony of voices, all urging her to give in, to let go.

“Hoseok, please,” YN begs, her voice trembling with fear. “Don’t let me die. I don’t want to die.”

Hoseok’s expression softens, but the pain in his eyes is still evident. “I don’t want you to die either, YN. But you have to understand that this world… it’s not a place for the living. If you stay here too long, you’ll lose your connection to the real world, and once that happens, I won’t be able to save you.”

The realization hits YN like a ton of bricks. She’s been using the dream world as a way to escape her pain, but in doing so, she’s been slowly severing her ties to reality. If she continues down this path, she’ll be lost forever, trapped in a world of shadows with no way out.

“Hoseok, I’m so sorry,” YN whispers, tears streaming down her face. “I didn’t mean for this to happen. I just… I didn’t know what else to do.”

A Glimmer of Hope

Hoseok steps forward, his hand reaching out to gently cup her face. “YN, it’s not too late. You can still go back. But you have to fight, you have to find the strength to face your reality. I’ll be with you, guiding you, but you have to make the choice to live.”

YN looks into Hoseok’s eyes, her heart aching with the knowledge that she has to let go of this world if she wants to survive. It’s the hardest decision she’s ever had to make, but deep down, she knows it’s the right one.

With a trembling hand, YN takes Hoseok’s hand and squeezes it tightly. “I’ll try,” she promises, her voice filled with determination. “I’ll try to live, for you… and for myself.”

Hoseok smiles, a glimmer of hope returning to his eyes. “That’s all I ask, YN. I believe in you.”

As the darkness around them begins to fade, YN feels a warmth spreading through her body, pulling her back toward the light. She knows that the road ahead will be difficult, that she’ll have to face her demons head-on, but with Hoseok’s guidance, she feels ready to take that first step.
