Chapter 12: The Fragility of Life

The Weight of Survival

YN spent the next day in a haze, the weight of her decision to live pressing heavily on her. The pain from the physical assault and emotional torment still lingered, but the thought of Hoseok and his plea for her to fight gave her a fragile resolve. She knew she couldn’t continue down the path she was on, but the idea of facing the world without him was terrifying.

School was no longer an option; the thought of returning to that place where she had been so cruelly broken was too much to bear. Instead, she stayed home, pretending to be sick, while her mind spiralled with thoughts of escape.

A Visit from RealityAs the day wore on, YN’s mother knocked on her door, concerned by her daughter’s sudden withdrawal. “YN, you’ve been in your room for days now. Are you sure you’re okay?”

YN forced a small smile, trying to mask the turmoil she felt inside. “I’m just tired, Mom. I need some time to rest.”

Her mother sighed, clearly not convinced but unwilling to push further. “Alright, but you need to eat something. I’ll bring up some food.”

As her mother left, YN’s thoughts drifted back to Hoseok. The brief moments of peace she found with him in her dreams were all that kept her going, but she knew she couldn’t rely on those moments forever. The boundary between life and death that Hoseok had spoken of was real, and she couldn’t ignore it any longer.

A Desperate Attempt at Normalcy

In an attempt to reclaim some sense of normalcy, YN decided to leave her room for the first time in days. She ventured downstairs, where her father was watching TV and her mother was busy in the kitchen. The mundane sounds of everyday life were both comforting and jarring, reminding her of the life she once had, before everything fell apart.

Her father glanced at her as she entered the living room, concern etched on his face. “You’re finally out of your room. How are you feeling?”

YN nodded, sitting down on the couch next to him. “I’m okay, Dad. Just trying to take it one day at a time.”Her father nodded, but his eyes betrayed his worry. “If you need anything, we’re here for you. Don’t forget that.”

The words were meant to be comforting, but they only made YN feel more isolated. Her parents didn’t know the full extent of her suffering, and she couldn’t bring herself to burden them with it. So she simply nodded again, trying to hold back the tears that threatened to spill.

Another Night, Another Dream

That night, YN found herself once again reaching for the sleeping pills. She knew she was playing a dangerous game, but the need to see Hoseok, to feel his comforting presence, was overwhelming. She took a smaller dose this time, just enough to drift into sleep.

In her dream, Hoseok was waiting for her as always, his expression a mix of relief and concern. He held her close the moment she appeared, as if trying to shield her from the pain of her waking life.

“You’re stronger than you think, YN,” Hoseok whispered, his voice a soothing balm to her frayed nerves. “But you need to be careful. You can’t keep using the pills like this.”

YN nodded, her face pressed against his chest. “I know. But it’s so hard, Hoseok. I don’t know how much longer I can keep going.”

Hoseok gently pulled back to look into her eyes, his gaze filled with unwavering support. “I’ll be with you every step of the way. But you have to promise me you’ll try to fight. Don’t give up.”

YN swallowed hard, feeling the weight of his words. “I’ll try, Hoseok. I’ll try for you.”

The Fragile PromiseAs the dream began to fade, YN felt a deep sense of loss, knowing she would soon be thrust back into reality. But Hoseok’s words stayed with her, giving her a fragile sense of hope to hold onto.

She woke up the next morning, the sunlight streaming through her window. For the first time in days, she felt a tiny spark of determination flicker within her. It wasn’t much, but it was something. A small step toward healing, even if the road ahead was long and filled with darkness.

YN knew she had to face her demons, both in the waking world and in her dreams. And with Hoseok by her side, she felt just a little more prepared to do so.
