chapter twelve; A SICKNESS CALLED FEAR.
ABBY HAS kinda just accepted that her life is a mess. It's a very depressing thing to admit, yes, but she's come to enjoy it (kinda . . . ) and merely giggles as JJ and Pope declare that the three of them are officially a school of fish and they must remain within the school and stick to one another like glue. She just looks between JJ and Pope with a sly grin, nibbling on her lip to suppress any additional laughter, but she finds the whole situation funny.
Is she crooked for that?
Two days ago she would've been crying. She would've busted into a hardcore panic attack and probably died right there on the spot — but, y'know, two days ago she hadn't been shot at or robbed a graveyard, nor had she broken any laws. She's tired of being afraid, and for the time being, she's mostly numb.
Fear is a sickness that Abby was diagnosed with when she was four, and it's been an ailment that she's suffered from every single day since then. Yes, she's still nervous, and in no way does she want to die, but she's finally seeing it for what it is — and adventure. A crazy, fever dream type of adventure, but that's exactly what Abigail needed to spice up her dull life.
She props her feet up on Kie's bag and leans back, sending the girl a look as the boys murmured beside them. She could hear them perfectly, but she chose to ignore their conversation — too afraid of, well, being afraid — and met Kie's concerned eyes.
"It's alright," Abby says with a small smile. Her eyes aren't as genuine, but she tries to cover it up. Kie didn't need to know the truth — and she swore to Pope that she wouldn't tell Kie — but she deserved a bit of reassurance.
Kie hesitated. She looked towards the ground — Abby could tell she cared about them just as much as she did — and gnawed on her lip. "Yeah . . . " she trailed off, and for once, Kiara Carrera didn't seem too confident. At this, Abby squeezes her arm before resting her head on her shoulder, and she nods, "Okay, okay. Hopefully the movie starts soon."
Once Kie began rummaging through her bag, Abby turned to the boys.
"So?"
JJ and Pope both slowly turned to Abby, conversation stopping in its tracks. She raised a brow, using her hand to gesture for them to talk, and JJ merely furrowed his brows, "What?"
"What's the plan?" Abby questions, lowering her voice. Her eyes find Rafe and Topper — Kelce right beside them — and she swallows thickly, tilting her head slightly to acknowledge their distant, yet threatening presences. When neither of the boys seemed to have an answer, Abby blinked, "You guys have been over here whispering like giddy schoolgirls and you weren't thinking of a plan?"
