Light emanated from Anastasia's Surger, slowly, but steadily bringing her stance to "launch" mode.
This light was the colour of dawn.
"Ho? An orange Odos? That's unexpected."I said, waiting for the projectile to be blown in my direction.
Ok, some more explaining; remember that "Odos" I told you in the carriage? Allow me to break it down to you in a simple and comprehensive matter.
A Magic Odos is the collective magic circuits that connect every beings body to magic. We don't know from where this magic comes from, but well, it exists. I do have a hypothesis about the Odos being the bridge between the physical universe and a metaverse, in which our consciousness is bound, and also the Spring Of Magia, the place from which all Magic is coming from...but I don't want to trouble your mind with baseless information, so just forget it.
Now, as we can see in Anastasia, this orange light emanating from her Surger has something to tell me. Specifically, the colour of the light signifies one's power. For regular humans, their magic is typically achromatic, and emanate no light at all. Thus, they are not compatible with the Odos, and the chance of them actually managing to learn even the most basic spells is highly unlikely. Hell, they don't even have Surgers.
Next come the Elves, their magic powers emitting a tinge of yellow light. The Elves were considered the most powerful benders of the Odos for some time in the past, before the rise of our tribe, but that's only a fraction of the power that we Urgs have.
Less known races with ties to the Odos are the Samash, a nomadic, barbarian folk in the very edge of the known world. They live in the unforgiving Steppes as farmers and constantly harass the Western borders of the Empire. Their people are notorious for their use of ancient witchcraft, harnessing the power of the moon. Rumours have it that their magic power is close to blue; a pretty powerful stage of connection with the Odos.
And last, but not least, at the centre of it all, are us, the Urgs, where our Colour Index, is somewhere between Green and purple. The Magic Colour Power Spectrum goes like this, from weakest, to strongest: Achromatic>Light Yellow>Yellow>Light Blue>Indigo>Green>Orange>Purple. Achromatic being the weakest, and Purple being the strongest.
However, this spectrum doesn't apply to everyone. There are, in fact, special categories out of the spectrum. For example, my sister's magic is the colour of black. Just like her soul. But, well, she exhibits magic prowess like no one else; except me, of course.
Colours outside from the Magic Colour Spectrum are considered extremely powerful, usually outside the comprehension of Magic Science. You'd think being exempted of the Colour Spectrum would make you extremely rare. Wrong.
While not in the majority, around 11% of Urgs do not find themselves in the Colour Spectrum at all. You see, having a Special Grade Colour doesn't make you unique; having the ability to control and harness your magical power is what makes you special.
As I've explained before, being one of the Specials, also has its problems. Yes, your magic is indeed very powerful, but when you try to harness and project it, you find yourself with your arms exploded, best case scenario. And that's why it's such a big deal. Those who have the talent and ability to control this power are extremely rare. I happen to be one of them.
I extended my Surger in front of me, with it not showing any magic signs whatsoever.
Anastasia was ready to cast her magic onto me. She's too slow. By now, I would've hit her a million of times. But I needn't show off. It isn't exactly my objective right now.
With her two lips slightly opening, she managed to utter two words, before launching her magic projectile my way. I felt like time was slowing down the closer it came towards me.
