Chapter 19 - Committed

“Look,” I turned to the man who followed us into the small but tidy sitting room, “Commissioner Mackenzie, you really...”

“Gavin, please call me Gavin,” his smile was genuine, that surprised me. “And you are?”

“I’m Barbie and this is Buffy.” I nodded to Joel who was standing in the middle of the room, his eyes darting around searching for the threats, exits, potential weapons, and whatever else he looked for.

Both men turned to look at me like I was on drugs.

“Barbie?” Gavin’s eyes clouded over, “Barbie was a plastic doll which represented commercialism, globalisation, sexism and all that was wrong with the world pre- environmental revolution.”

“Wow, really?  I was told that it was short for Barbara.”

His face flushed.  Gotcha!  He had just let slip that he knew this dimensions history.  He had his memory intact.  I fought to keep my face looking indifferent.

His eyes immediately flashed to our wrists.  That’s right he had said something in his speech about wrist indicators, they must contain personal information.  He was now looking at our matching watches with a confused expression.

“What are they?  Where are your wrist identifiers?”  He now looked perplexed.  Joel was starting to move his weight to the balls of his feet.  This could be bad.

“They gave us these,” I interjected and shrugged trying to look casual as I held up my wrist, “said it was some sort of trial, new model apparently.  Very hush, hush, some sort of politics involved.”  I really hoped that made sense to him.  I didn’t want him contacting HQ and demanding to know what this trial was about.  Politics, I was hoping that this simple term would give my explanation credibility.

Gavin’s face dropped but then he nodded and his smile returned.  Unfortunately so did the suggestiveness in his eyes.  Damn.  His eyes went from Joel to me then back.  He smiled broadly.

“Look Barbie, calm her down before she claws my eyes out will you,” laughing as he nodded to Joel.  “She’s got to learn to share you.  Despite what you both are attempting to do, she can’t keep you all to herself.  I want a piece of you too.” His eyes were smouldering into me but his lips were curled softly in a half smile.

What?  He knew?  Hell.  Hang on, he thought we were together – as girls?  Wow.  And this wasn’t a problem to him?  Wow.

This could be a trap.  He might be testing us.

“You think we are lovers?” I asked to assess his reaction.  I moved in closer to Joel, close enough to feel his breath in my hair and his body heat behind me.

“Well, it’s not like it isn’t obvious.  And it’s not like it is a problem.  If she was a guy, well then, yeah that would be completely different!” Gavin gave a snort of laughter.  “But there’s never been an issue with same gender relationships.   Anyway, come on Barbie, pain?  Really?  With the commitment maker available?  No, she’s just jealous, jealous that you find me attractive.”

Yep.  He was genuine.  Way off the mark, but he genuinely believed that.

“Are you jealous, baby?” I turned to Joel speaking with my best dumb blonde voice, his eyebrow rose with his ‘what the hell’ expression, “Aww, baby, you don’t have to be jealous.  You’re the only girl for me.”  I smiled, fighting the smirk, as I looped my arms around his neck and rubbed myself against him.

I was desperately trying to communicate to Joel with my eyes that he should play along when I felt the other man in the room move in very closely behind me.  Joels hands were clenched by his side so it had to be Gavin’s fingers trailing down me.
