Chapter 35 - Interview with Blair
The silence was deafening. I had no desire to speak to this man and he clearly had no interest in me. I looked out the window and watched Dimension Zero flash by. There was no point in trying to escape. He was holding Joel and he wouldn’t be released while I was free.
I can’t say how long our journey took. It certainly felt like a long time. The silence, the fear and the yearning I had to see Joel all meant that time ticked slowly.
“Company House,” the voice surprised me. I turned to the man next to me but he was looking out the window.
As the vehicle turned into the next street we were confronted by a massive structure. It was huge yet lacking any distinguishing characteristics. It was simply a long, wide block-like building. No colour, no embellishments, no pizzazz, just functional. It looked like a government building but bigger, much bigger.
Wire fences and guard stations surrounded it. The company clearly took security seriously. I watched as we entered the gates, armed men marched everywhere. They either owned an army or had one out on loan. Who did these people think they were?
The vehicle drew to a stop outside a plain door set into the side of the building. Several troops instantly lined the gap between the vehicle door and the building.
“After you, my dear,” his cold voice grated as the door was opened.
I had no alternatives but to do as I was told. I climbed out and walked into the building with a gun wedged between my shoulder blades. The door shut behind us with a resounding crash and the unmistakeable metallic clicking noise of a lock falling into place. The florescence above me buzzed softly as I was encouraged with a rough jab from the gun to continue. I heard footsteps behind me but I didn’t turn, I followed the man in front to me and kept my eyes open for anything.
I wasn’t sure what I was looking for, maybe some sort of inspiration, maybe a hint of a solution, or just something to give me hope. However the insides of the building were as uneventful as the outside décor. I was blinded by beige. These guys needed to fire their feng-shui interior designer, because this place gave off some seriously bad vibes.
We walked down the long hallway with doors studded at regular intervals for its entire length. We saw no one and nothing that gave me cause to believe.
With each step I found myself more depressed. I still had no idea what this building of doors held for us and I yearned for Joel. He was somewhere in here? Was he behind one of these doors? Were they taking me to him or were they going to hold us separately? What state would he be in?
I was still lost in my questions when the guard in front of me stopped and turned. I nearly crashed into him as I skidded to a stop. My heart thudded with anticipation and fear as Inspector Blair swiped a something through the card reader next to the door. A metallic clink preceded the door smoothly swinging open. The room is small and windowless. A table and chairs sat empty in the middle of the room. But that wasn’t what caught my attention. In the far corner was a bed. The figure that occupied it was clearly shaking, almost convulsing. Without any invitation, I found myself on my knees next to the bed softly easing back his hair as the tears flowed.
“Interesting,” The cold voice was smug in the doorway. “In four hours the worst of the drug should be clear of his system. I will be back to interview you both then, unless you would prefer a separate room?”
