Chapter 6

Running away?

I sat in the guest room on the bed waiting for drench to knock on my door. I had nothing to pack. So I sat there on the bed wondering where we would go. Would we be in trouble if rainy found out? That answer to that was a for sure yes. But seeing how serious drench was about this. I knew we wouldn’t be found. I was deep in thought when there was a quite knock on the door.

I went and opened it there was drench with 3 packs full of stuff.

“What? I wanted to be prepared” he whispered handing one to me it was full but surprisingly not very heavy.

We walked into the hall. We were walking to the living room when we heard voices. I looked at drench we walked closer listening

“The fire almost engulfed the whole building before we got it out. There was no obvious evidence to tell us what lit the building on fire. Maybe some reckless kids. Back to you Drop” we walked into the living room. The TV was on the news channel which was the only light in the whole room. It made it look more ominous.

There on the couch was Rainy. Luckily we were still in the shadows. Drench walked a little closer.

“She’s a sleep” he whispered to me, walking over by his mom.

There on the floor was a tub of mint chocolate chip ice cream. In Rainy’s hand was a spoon. It still had some ice cream on it that was dripping on the floor. Drench started walking to the door. I walked next to him. A loud noise came from were Rainy was sleeping. we both looked back startled. Rainy had just turned over in her sleep. She dropped the spoon she was holding. I was surprised she didn’t wake up. This time me and drench ran to the door.

Outside it was dark the smell of the ocean filled my nose and mouth. Drench walked next to me.

“It’s wonderful out here” I said looking up at the sky.

The stars are so bright and beautiful. Like when you’re camping. I gazed up at them as we walked

“It sure is”

we both looked up at the stars for a moment longer. Then we started walking towards the forest.

“So where are we looking first?

”“well I’m not totally sure about that part.”

I looked at him startled “so we are just wondering around mindlessly?”

“No no we are going somewhere the woods” he pointed to the wall of trees, at the farther end of the beach.

We walked in silence the rest of the way. What I didn’t expect is what I got. the trees were humongous. There needles were like swords. Luckily there tips weren’t sharp. But I stood back any way

“These trees are to scare people. There only here at the beginning the others are normal.” drench said walking through them, until I couldn’t see him anymore. “come on!” he shouted.

I ran through the needles. Each needle was like a huge sausage. but green and heavier.

When I got to the other side it was dark. The light of the moon we had been walking by was now blocked by the tall trees.

“Inside the pack you have, there should be a flash light.” he reached into his pack and pulled out a small orange flash light. He turned it on. It blinked then went out. He hit it against his hand a couple times. Then it turned on again I reached into my pack and pulled out a flash light. It was just like drenches but it was brown. I turned it on, and followed after him.

The forest was dark and damp. The smell of the ocean was more distant. Everything was dark, except what was lit by the beams of our flashlights.

“Were are we going?” I said.

This was making no sense to me.

“We are going to find my dad” he just kept walking on.

The trees next to us started rustling. I quickly pointed my flash light to be the sound came from.

“What was that?”

By this point we had been walking for many hours. or that’s what it felt like. Then something jumps out of the tree. It landed in front of us. I pointed my flash light at it, so did drench. There sat an unusually large lizard. It had a frill neck which was mostly brown. Its eyes flicked between me a drench. My heart stopped between beats. The lizard was about as big as a large cat. Its tongue flicked out to taste the air. Then it made the sound of a hissing cat, and then jumped back into the trees.

“What was that thing?” I was shaking fiercely from.

“I have no idea. I knew there were weird creatures in these forests. But not that weird.”

as we kept walking every noise I heard scared me. I didn’t want to be attacked by a giant flying squirrel that hisses and then bites off your head.

I bumped into drench.

“Were staying here tonight.”

I looked around were we were standing. We were in a small clearing. It was lit by the moon coming through a break in the trees. Drench sat down and started unpacking.

“Were are we going to sleep?” I looked at the ground beneath me. it looked dry enough.

“On these” drench said pulling three blankets out of his pack.

“One on the bottom one on the top” he said as he demonstrated it for me.

When I finally lied down I realized how tired I really was. But I didn’t go to sleep as easily. I stayed awake longer thinking about what in the world I was doing. am I crazy for trusting this boy I barely know? Should I have trusted him? These questions were going through my mind when I finally drifted off to sleep.
