Chapter 7

Chocolate pop-tarts

I awoke abruptly to the sound of a crackling fire. I looked over at drenches bed he was still in it. I sat up in my makeshift bed and looked below me, I could see the smoke of the fire. There was the shape of a person sitting next to it. Who could that be? Fear ran through me. It could be a fire warrior.

“Hello sleeping beauty.” said the person sitting next to the fire.

I froze I just sat and stared down at what sounded like a her.

“What are you and your prince charming doing out in the forest?”

Prince charming? It made me confused.  But for some reason it made sense.

“Who are you?” I asked getting up.

It wasn’t a fire warrior.

“Who am I well let’s see... A runaway I guess I should say.”

I got up and started walking closer to the fire. the sun was coming up. the air was getting hotter, and more humid.

There by the fire sat a girl. She had orange hair up in a pony tail. And yellow streaks runny down the side. She had beautiful brown eyes. she looked older than me about 17.  She was wearing a black shirt with a yellow lightning belt. She was eating something that looked similar to a chocolate pop-tart.

“You want one?” she held out a pop-tart to me

“No thanks”

"Hi I'm Lighting." She held out her hand but I didn't shake it.

"I'm Snowflake." I slowly sat down  but I didn't  let my eyes leave her face.

“So why are you out here” She asked me.

“Well we are looking for something and we have no idea where it was so Drench pulled me out here.” I tried to leave are real mission away from this stranger.

“Interesting well this isn’t a safe place.” she shoved the rest of her chocolate poptart into her mouth.

“Then why are you out here?” I challenged.

She sputtered and coughed little bits on chocolate into the fire. She leaned closer to me her face almost in the fire.

“well I guess you could say I didn’t like my old home. So I came here.” She slowly backed up.

That’s when I heard a sound coming from the other side of the clearing. I remembered Drench was still here.

“oh shoot!” I said under my breath

“What?” Lighting said looking up to the hill.

“It's Drench” I bit my lip, Drench wouldn’t like this one bit

“What was that?” lightning looked up into the trees.

I saw the top of his blond hair over the hill. It looked like lightning noticed too.

"Here come prince charming." She grabbed a stick next to her.

I hadn’t noticed the stick before. It was long at think and perfectly round. It looked smooth to the touch. She pointed it protectively towards the hill.

“No don’t, it’s just Drench.” I said to her

I don’t know what that stick thing is. But by the way lightning was holding it I don’t think it was for hiking.

“I know." She looked down at the stick in her hand."Oh sorry” she put her stick down on the ground.

“Who…? What…?” Came Drenchs groggy voice from were he stood.

I looked up. Drench had stopped half way down the hill.

“Um…”

“Hi prince charming” she shook the hair out of her face.

“Um hi?” He looked at me.

I shrugged my shoulders. He walked down the rest of the way.

“Who are you?” Drench asked Lightning.

“Well I’m Lightning” she smiled sheepishly.

“Hi I’m Drench” He looked unsure.

“Pop-tart?” lighting held out a pop-tart towards drench.

He shook his head. And sat down next to the fire. He looked at Lighting a bit longer then a look of shock covered his face. He quickly stood up.

“You’re a fire person?!” He stepped back from her.

“Ya what’s it to you?” she took another bite of her pop-tart.

“It’s just… never mind” but he didn't calm down.

“So where are you guys headed?”

“To the fire palace”

“No you can’t go there”

“Why not”

“Because… just because.” She stood up.

I put my hand behind me. I felt something I moved my fingers and felt the crinkle of paper. I turned around and grabbed a big book that was behind me.

It was worn and crinkled from being wet, I held it in front of me. Drench and lighting were still going on about going to the fire palace. The cover of the book was a light green it was very worn. I rubbed off some dirt on the front. The title was GHOSTS, TROLLS, AND OTHER CREATURES. I opened it to the first page. There was a picture of a nasty looking old lady who was all hunched down an evil grin crossed her nasty face. I quickly closed the book and put it into my pack.

“Fine but you will want me with you if you go to the castle.”

“Why” I said to join their conversation.

“Because I know it well.”

“And how do you know it well?” Drench said snottily.

“Hey I’m not going to be pushed over by a boy younger than me.” She stood up and turned around.

“Well good bye Lightning nice to meet you” Drench said grabbing my hand and pulling me away.

“wait we can’t just leave her here.”

“yes we can”

I got my arm out of his grip.

“Lightning?”

“What?” she turned around.

“Do you want to come along?”

“Sure.”

She walked over to us. Drench rolled his eyes and started walking.

“So you ran away from home?”

“Ya”

“Why”

“Well they wouldn’t let me do things I wanted I always had to do what they wanted, so I left”

Me and her kept up a conversation as we walked. No strange animals ran into us. I walked up to Drench.

“Why don’t you like her?” I whispered fiercely to him.

“Why? Because she is a fire”

“So what does that have anything to do with her?”

“Well she just makes me uneasy”

We stopped talking after that but Lightning didn’t. She was talking to someone.

“I don’t know maybe”

there was no reply.

“Well it’s something to do.”

Again no reply.

“Well what would you want me to do?”

Who is she talking to? I repeatedly turned to look behind me but never saw any one.
