Chapter 10

Cupcake?

We woke up to a surprise. Lightning had gone and found us some edible berries. I looked at them they were strange. They were a bright yellow with blue dots. I looked at one in my hand. It looked like something that would be poisonous.

I looked up at her she was happily popping them in her mouth. So was drench. I looked down and put one in my mouth. I bit down slowly the juice squirted in my mouth.

My face puckered up. Then it relaxed it started outrageously sour. Now it tasted like fruit punch. Not that nasty stuff in juice boxes that the people who say there sorry you’re in the foster program give you.

It’s like freshly squeezed fruit all mixed together. I closed my eyes and enjoyed it.

“Come on you guys let’s get going” lightning said grabbing her bag.

I ran and grabbed mine. And raced after her and drench.

“How did you guys sleep?” I asked them.

“Surprisingly wonderful!” Drench said

“Fine” was all lightning answered.

The forest was quieter than usual. I kept looking around wondering when something would hop out at us. Fire warrior or hissing giant lizard. Where are all the bunny rabbits and woodland creatures from the fairy tales?

The sound of a twig snapping caught all of our attention. We all looked at were the sound came from. Then a rush of air and green scales. There sitting in front of us was the extra large lizard. It didn’t frighten me as much this time as it did last time.

“A lizard?” lightning said getting a little closer.

I motioned her to get back but she didn’t pay attention.

“Aren’t you the cutest little thing” she kept getting closer.

Would it bite her face off? Would it spit poisonous gas? Or would it breathe fire and burn her to a crisp?

Then I heard a sound I never imagined would come out of a huge lizard. It was purring. Lightning started petting it and it nuzzled her hand.

“Aww it’s so cute.” I said walking towards it.

It hissed at my hand. I quickly pulled it back. What was going on? Why was it purring the hissing?

“Bad lizard!” drench scolded.

The lizard hissed loudly up at drench. And then it nuzzled up to lightning’s hands she picked it up.

“He is not a bad lizard he is just misunderstood.” He face got all happy and she started wiggling her and the lizard’s noses together. “you’re a good lizard aren’t you? Yes you are. Yes you are.” She said in an annoying baby voice.

I rolled my eyes and looked over at drench. He looked like he was about to gag. He noticed me looking at him he pointed at his mouth and did a puking motion. I silently laughed to myself.

“Let’s get going I want to get to the palace sooner than later.” Me and drench started walking away lightning following after us.

Lightning had to lead the way so we had to stop her from her baby talk to ask her directions. She was annoying us. The lizard was just sitting in her arms purring. Why was it so content with her?

“Ok I’m so tired can we stop?” I said my legs felt like jell-o.

“sure”

“ya cupcake is asleep” lightning said petting the lizards head.

“Cupcake? Who is cupcake?”

“The lizard silly.” she gently laid it down on the blanket she just spread out.

“Well good night you guys” drench said lying on his bed.

Drench sat on his bed a few yards away from ours. Me and lightning sleep next to the fire. For some reason drench dislikes fire. Probably because his father most likely died from it.

I looked over at lightning. She held the lizard on her lap she picked him up and kissed him straight on the lips. I grimaced nasty. I turned around so I didn’t have to watch her and went swiftly off to sleep.
