The girl had been taken to a separate part of the household, cause she was the only girl, in a place full of hormonal teen boys. So she got a little "room" for herself, it was on an outer corner of the building, you'd go up a ladder and there was a little platform, like a balcony, with a hammock and a few folded clothes on the floor. She found the experience would be easier that way.
She'd thought a lot about whether to go or not to the bonfire. Like, there was nothing else that she could do. And if she was really going to be there for long she could meet the other gladers (even if she was only looking forward to know Newt better). She didn't get the chance to actually talk to him. Not that she remembers anything about herself that she would like to talk about.
She got dressed with some of the clothes that were left for her and went in the direction of the bonfire. Some boys were talking around the fire and some were in a fight circle, just hitting each other. It was like a fight game, but it didn't seem to have any rules except for pushing and hitting like irrational beings.
The girl's eyes trailed along the people, looking for that one known face. When she found Newt, she went over to him, sitting beside him on the branch. He was distanced from the mass of boys, looking at the fire from afar.
"Hello there Greenie. Are you feeling any better?" Asked the blonde with that english accent.
"Yeah. Thanks for helping me earlier, it was nice of you."
"Nah, don't worry, mate."
She noticed the cup on his hand, with a dense looking drink.
"Is that alcohol?"
"Ah, this is Gally's special drink."
"What is it?" She asked while she took the cup the boy offered.
"No one knows, but it can make you pretty bloody funky if you have enough." He smiled.
She brought the cup to her nose, making a gag motion because of the strong smell. Newt laughed.
"Not for the weak ones huh." He said to the girl as a challenge.
She looked at him, and took a sip. She grimaced at the strong bitter taste. But then turned it heads up, drinking the whole thing. The blonde was impressed, and just laughed in astonishment.
"So this is what you do for fun?" The H/C haired asked, smiling at the boy's expression.
"Well, there's not much to do around here except for work."
She just nodded, and then a loud noise came from beyond the walls, the same one from before.
"What the..."
"That's the maze, don't worry."
"What... how did it...?" She couldn't form the question so Newt just answered.
"The maze, It's changing. It moves every night." His voice was low and he sighed slightly.
"But then... how will we ever get out?"
"That's the whole point of it."
She scoffed in disbelief. She was pissed.
"Who did this? Who are these people?"
"We don't know. But they are some sadistic bloody shanks."
The conversation got cut off when Gally came up to them.
"Wassup green bean! Hey Newt, what you doin with ma girl?!" Exclaimed a drunk-looking Gally, coming from the fight circle. He came closer to the duo,
"Shuck off Gally." Said Newt annoyed.
"Shut up. Come join the party 'shovel girl'!"
"Shovel girl? That's a good one, real creative. Can I go now?! Okay, how about you be, 'not man enough to come up front' or maybe 'the guy who hits girls from the back'? Those are good right?!" She said, a challenging look on her face, as she stepped closer to him. Newt, getting alarmed, signaled to one of the boys who watched the scene in astonishment, to fetch the first in command, who was currently out of sight.
Gally looked around, embarrassed, but he tried to hide it. A few boys around the fire turned around to watch as he stood in front of the short girl, who didn't change her look for one second.
"What? You think you could win me off?" He asked quietly to the H/C haired girl, who was trying her best to look confident.
"Yeah. I'd like to kick your ass. Just, this time, don't be a coward." She said, pushing his chest with her index and stepping back, keeping her eyes on the boy. The circle was now around the two of them, as she hoped he wouldn't hold back.
"Hey, come on, Alby is going to kill you Gally." Said Newt standing up.
"He's not here is he? What a pity, he won't see me crush this girly." Gally said, pointing to her.
She ran to him, throwing a punch to his face, but he dodged and hit her shoulder. She stepped away for just one second, and kicked him on the knee. He fell, but rolled himself up right after, punching her in the stomach. She hissed in pain, but threw her fist at the boy's nose, and kicked him in the ribs. He tried punching her but she dodged, and he fell. She kicked him again, but he kicked her foot, leading her to the ground.
She grunted in anger as Gally straddled her, punching her cheek and trying to hold her still by her forearms, but she was able to push him off with her feet. At this point, they were both choking and pushing each other, rolling on the sand, as boys cheered and screamed. Newt shouting for them to stop.
Along the way, the girl hit her head on the floor, leaving Gally to take advantage of her drousiness. Everything got blurred for a second, and the blonde was able to stand up, spitting blood, and kick the girls stomach. He raised his hand in victory, above the disoriented girl. She was hurt, and could hear nothing but muffled cheers. Her breathing was shallow from the hit, making her cough.
She couldn't see much, but she noticed when someone came and screamed at Gally. She focused, finally being able to stand up. There was an asian boy pushing him. He wasn't as tall as the other boys, but was very very strong and handsome. She saw Alby walk to them, and then someone came and picked the girl up. She didn't care, just laid her head on the boy's chest and closed her eyes in exhaustion.
She had to go up the ladder on her own, after the boy. As soon as she stepped on the platform she felt lightheaded and fell back into the boy's arms. She was layed down on her hammock, by the person she had now come to realize was Newt. She got embarrassed for picking a fight. And she lost so it was even worse.
"What were you bloody thinking, girl? Are you mad?" He asked, more worried than pissed, but before she could say anything, the asian boy and Alby arrived.
"How is she?" Asked the black haired.
"She's gonna be okay, nothing too serious." Newt responded. Alby came closer and stroke a strand of hair out of the girls face.
"Let's let her rest now. I'll deal with her tomorrow."
